The long-awaited decision not only pleases Butte Falls Friends of the Library members but also allows Prospect’s library project to proceed. "We decided to bundle Butte Falls and Prospect as one building project," said Deputy County Administrator Dave Kanner. "The inaction in Butte Falls has been holding up both projects." The council’s decision to sell the Depot Building to Jackson County Library Services finally gives the project a home. Advertisement Butte Falls has $378,000 to spend for its refurbished library and Prospect has $438,000. Both are funded through a $38.9 million library bond passed by voters in May 2000. Ted Stark, upper Rogue regional manager for Jackson County Library Services, says the 1,000-square-foot Depot Building has housed the town’s books for more than 10 years. The city owns the building and has been leasing it to the county library system for $1 a year with the intent to eventually remodel it into a new library, Stark said. The delay came when the city, needing more room for its offices, began considering the Depot Building. Mayor Steve Harvey said nine months of community discussion culminated in a decision to terminate the library’s lease and utilize the building as a new City Hall. Stark said the city notified the library it was facing "eviction." At that point, the library was going to be built on property near the Assembly of God Church. Friends of the Butte Falls Library, which wanted the library to remain in its traditional location, took the group’s concerns to the public with a petition drive. The council’s decision to sell was approved in a 4 to 2 vote Tuesday. Kanner presented the particulars of the project to Jackson County commissioners in an executive session Thursday. Kanner said the commissioners agreed to reiterate last year’s original purchase offer of $174,000 for the Depot Station property in spite of the delays. "In every other community, we’ve worked really hard to respect community wishes," said Kanner.
