Edwards cruises to fourth Timberline win YREKA, Calif. � Paris Edwards, Oregon�s defending Class 4A state girls cross country champion, demonstrated on Saturday she�s ready for a repeat performance. The Ashland High senior began her final season for the Grizzlies becoming a four-time winner in the Timberline Bank Invitational. Edwards outlegged runner-up Liz Lindgren of Klamath Union by 19 seconds on the 4,000-meter course, entering the chute in 15 minutes, 4 seconds. Foothill of Redding, Calif., and Klamath Union scored 97 points apiece, but the former edged the Pels on the strength of its sixth-place runner. Rogue River senior Bobbi Wright and St. Mary�s sophomore Leah Sawyer, favorites to win the Skyline Conference and District 5 2A championships, placed fifth and sixth. Ashland, South Medford, Crater and Grants Pass finished in the fourth through seventh spots in a field that featured runners from more than 20 schools. Sophomore Lauren Jesperson led Klamath Union to an easy victory in the boys competition, covering the 5,000-meter course in 15:54 � six seconds ahead of St. Mary�s senior Trevor Coolidge. Jesperson was ninth in the 4A state meet last November, while Coolidge was the 2A runner-up. Roseburg was a surprising third, just ahead of Grants Pass, while Ashland, South Medford and Crater held down the fifth-through-seventh spots. Cole, SM, 17:27 Football HENLEY 28, BANDON 6 � At Bandon, quarterback Frank Gauntz threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the fifth-ranked Henley Hornets opened the season with a 28-6 triumph over Bandon of the Far West League. Gauntz completed 12 of 20 passes for 180 yards with one interception. He also rushed for 68 yards on 11 carries. He opened the scoring with a 61-yard touchdown pass to Michael Nunes then put the Hornets ahead for good with a 27-yard run later in the second quarter that broke a 6-6 tie. Nunes caught five passes for 100 yards. Overall, the Hornets outgained the Tigers 393-130. MARY�S 12 � At Murphy, St. Mary�s held its own against Hidden Valley�s junior varsity for two quarters, but was outmanned in the second half as the Crusaders suffered a 36-12 loss in their season opener Saturday afternoon. Hidden Valley led 8-0 at the half then scored twice in both the third and fourth quarters. Down to 15 players and out of healthy running backs, St. Mary�s coach Dick Maurer plucked freshman John Wing from the line put him in the backfield late this week. With Alex Duncan out with a hamstring injury and Nick Alston nursing a similar injury, Wing, a 6-foot, 285-pounder, provided St. Mary�s with its first touchdown of the season on a 1-yard plunge Senior quarterback Jason Caplan completed 8 of 18 passes for 192 yards with two interceptions. He hooked up for a 65-yard TD pass with Tyler Stout , who caught six passes for 135 yards. Volleyball YREKA TOURNAMENT� At Yreka, t he Phoenix girls volleyball team topped the consolation bracket. of the Yreka Invitational. In its first match against Weed, Calif., Phoenix won 15-5, 15-7. In the second, Phoenix beat North Valley 15-11, 15-9. Two Phoenix players made the all-tourney team. Senior outside hitter Sutton Jackson of Phoenix scored 15 kills and went 10-for-10 on serves. Sophomore Kelsey Russell contributed 18 assists in two matches. Junior outside hitter April Darby also chipped in with 9 kills while going 8-for-9 on serves. CASCADE CAPTURES GLENDALE TOURNAMENT � At Glendale, Cascade Christian launched its season by winning all 12 of its games Saturday en route to winning the eight-team Glendale Tournament Cascade won three pool matches then followed up with three bracket victories. The Challengers put away Elkton, 15-1, 15-10, in the finals Junior setter Whitney Brookins, had a standout day. Senior Kelly Clarke, who normally plays on the outside, sparkled in the middle, while junior Krystle Holtz had a hot hand at the service line and sophomore Janee Johnson hit well on the outside. In pool play, Cascade defeated Days Creek, 15-8, 15-8, Elkton 15-13, 15-8 and Yoncalla 15-8, 15-7. In bracket play, the Challengers ousted Umpqua Valley Christian, 15-7, 15-3, in the quarterfinals and Days Creek, 15-4, 16-14, in the semifinals. ST. MARY�S WINS TOURNAMENT � At Oakridge, the St. Mary�s Crusaders registered a hard-fought, 13-15, 16-14, 15-13 win over Central Linn in the championship match of the 10-team Oakridge tournament. The Crusaders, who finished runner-up at last year�s Class 2A state tournament, rode the play of all-tournament selections Kristen Zielony and Lani Brophy to stage a big comeback against the Cobras as they rallied from a 13-6 deficit in the third game. Zielony put down a big kill after taking a quick set from Brophy that started the comeback. Brophy was 17-for-17 serving with 17 digs and 17 assists in the title match. Zielony had 17 digs and 14 kills, while Kristina Easton chipped in 14 digs and Libby Trum 12. St. Mary�s went 4-0 in pool play and then defeated host Oakridge in the semifinals 15-3, 15-3.
