Oregon golfers eighth COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. � A four-person Oregon contingent that includes Medford�s Tai Kinney and Grants Pass� Johnna Nealy is in eighth place after the second round of the 23rd Girls Junior America�s Matches at Eisenhower Golf Course at the Air Force Academy. There are 18 teams of 17-and-under aged players in the 54-hole event. Kinney rediscovered her stroke and shot a 75 Wednesday after an opening-round 84. Nealy also improved greatly with a 78 on the heels of an 86. Teammate Kailin Downs of Bend shot a 77 for the second straight day while Aloha�s Kristin Svicarovich shot a 78. Oregon�s 473 total leaves it 25 strokes behind Mexico�s 448. Northern California is one stroke off the lead at 449, and Washington is third at 462. Kim Welch of Northern California shot a 72 for a 145 two-day total to take the individual lead. Baseball NORTH JACKSON 11-22, GRANTS PASS 1-1 � At Grants Pass, the Royals closed their regular season in grand fashion with a dominating sweep of the Gold Miners in American Legion A action on Tuesday. Scott Stockton led the way for North Jackson by going 6-for-9 with seven runs and five RBIs in the twin bill. Ryan Garrett had four hits, four runs and six RBIs. Pitchers Bryan Strodthoff and Matt Holte each went the distance for North Jackson, with each allowing only one earned run. Holte also smacked his first home run of the season in Game 2, a three-run shot in the fifth inning. The Royals� Nick Newmann had two hits and four RBIs in the nightcap, while Mark Farrell and Evan Pogue each added two hits and two RBIs. North Jackson (28-10, 22-2 Area 4) will open a best-of-three series with Roseburg Pepsi at Eagle Point on Friday. Game 2 is scheduled Saturday at Roseburg and, if necessary, the third game will be Sunday at Eagle Point. All game times are 7 p.m. The winner of the series advances to the state tournament in Hillsboro beginning Aug. 3. MEDFORD BABE RUTH � At Eugene, the Medford Babe Ruth All-Star team had little trouble in its first-round game at the Babe Ruth 13-year-old State Tournament. Medford defeated Gold Coast, 16-2, in a called after the fifth inning due to the 10-run mercy rule. Ben Running led the offensive attack with a triple and a double to go along with four RBIs. Marcus James and Mike Barry checked Gold Coast on six hits over five innings. Medford plays in a second-round game at Noon on Friday at Sheldon High. Boys Basketball MINNESOTA ALL-STARS 69, OREGON ICE 61 � At Colorado Springs, Colo., four players from the Southern Oregon area scored 16 of the Oregon Ice�s 24 fourth-quarter points in a consolation bracket loss at the BCI 15-under Nationals at the Air Force Academy. The Ice, made up of players from throughout Oregon, climbed back from a 17-point deficit to pull within 55-52 midway through the fourth. Ryan Lucas, a freshman-to-be at North Medford High, scored six of his 12 points in the final period. Incoming North sophomore Chris Strahm notched all four of his points in the final stanza. Beau Hovland, also an incoming freshman at North, added nine points, and Mazama High�s Levell Hesia scored 12. The Ice wraps up play today. Girls Basketball NORTH MEDFORD STARTS WITH WIN � North Medford�s summer basketball team opened Wednesday�s action with a 54-21 win over Selma, Calif. Trailing 13-12 at halftime, the Tornado took control with an intense full-court press in the second half. Kara Hwang led the way against Selma with 13 points, while incoming North freshman Anna Lilly had nine points. Kelsey Versteeg and Tasha Williams each chipped in eight points.
