We might wonder if someone is on a nationwide tour urging people to “Just Say You Know,” because overuse of the “you know” phrase has gone viral. Among those reliant on this verbal crutch are high-profile people, such as politicians and media commentators, who should set a higher standard. They should overcome their pause phobia — fear that a pause reflects uncertainty and must be filled. A confident speaker can handle a silent pause, keeping it brief lest his listeners provide filler in the form of a collective yawn. I'd prefer a speaker’s prolonged silence to his mouthing of successive "you know" phrases. A silent pause is bearable. Irksome “you know” pause-fillers are not. Concerted efforts should be made to eradicate this “you know” contagion. Marie Arvette Medford Showcase local lives Thank you for providing a wide range of news, opinion and information. When I open the morning paper I would like to see the lives of taxpaying businesses and citizens of Southern Oregon showcased, and fewer shock and awe stories — more about the bedrock of our community. This is prime real estate to feature citizens contributing to our growth and stability, leaving me a choice to peruse the more titillating stories and photos on other pages. Ducharme Central Point as check annoying It has been over four hours since my early-morning reverie of coffee and cat in my lap, watching the news, was smashed from the door pounding and doorbell ringing by someone purportedly checking for gas leaks at 7:55 a.m. And in this time, my attitude has not improved. I didn’t take time to verify the man’s authenticity. My nose, and those of friends, could detect no gas odor either at the meter or inside my house. Avista, here’s my suggestion, for what it’s worth: At least notify your customers you plan to conduct such a survey, and that your work day may begin early. Just not before 8 a.m., thank you. Dealing with a crotchety old codger and his grumpy cat by pounding on our door at that hour, did not endear yourselves to us. And I was in no mood to let your guy past my gate while I was still barefoot. Kurt Austermann Medford Out of the mainstream The MT recently published a number of vulgar and extremely repetitive letters in which the word "hate" was tossed around as freely as a common preposition. The targets of these tiresome screeds are, of course, Republicans. Oh, did I say Republicans were the targets? Should have said anyone to the right of either Comrade Bernie, or Hillary, well-known serial liar and security risk. By putting these two specimens up for election, the Dems have moved themselves well out of the mainstream of American politics. Underlining the trend, Senator Merkley has just endorsed Bernie Sanders for president, thereby, we must assume, declaring himself a Socialist. Socialism promises a free lunch (of which there ain't no such thing), and requires an expansion of state power, most visibly represented by hordes of bureaucratic busybodies. Oregon voters can't do much about Sanders, but we have the power to keep Merkley out of public office, and in the future should do so. C. S.
