By Thomas Moriarty Mail Tribune Posted Dec. 30, 2014 @ 12:49 pm Updated Dec 31, 2014 at 12:27 AM » RELATED CONTENT • Eastwood Drive Fire » Social News Fire investigators are trying to determine the cause of a blaze that gutted the living room of an east Medford home Tuesday barely an hour after an initial report of a fire at the address proved unfounded. Medford Fire-Rescue Chief Brian Fish said the department had first gotten a call around 11:30 a.m. of a Christmas tree fire at 49 Eastwood Drive that reportedly had set the rest of the house ablaze, but didn't find anything amiss when crews arrived on scene. Less than an hour later, though, firefighters found themselves back at the same address, dealing with a very real fire that was reported at about 12:20 p.m. Police were first on scene and found the living room ablaze. Fish said officers blocked off nearby intersections while firefighters fought the flames, knocking down the fire in about 10 minutes. Fish couldn't say whether the home was a total loss, but said the attic was damaged by flames and the interior had suffered extensive smoke damage. Nobody was injured in the blaze, and Fish said it hadn't posed a threat to neighboring homes. As of 1 p.m., three investigators from Medford fire were on scene, along with detectives and officers from the Medford Police Department. Fish said he didn't know how many people lived in the home, but at least one female occupant was on scene being interviewed by investigators. Fish said it isn't known whether she was inside the house when the fire started. Neighbors said police had been called to the house on numerous occasions. Fish said it was too early in the investigation to identify the cause of the fire, and described the earlier call to the address as "coincidental." In addition to Medford fire and police personnel, Fish said, engines from Jackson County Fire District 3 and the Jacksonville Fire Department also responded to the fire.
