Aug. 16, 1920 Continued THE SCREEN Miss Clayton at Her Best Did you read “The Ladder of Lies,” written by Harrold Vickers which appeared in “Snappy Stories” magazine some time ago? This delightful story has been transferred to the screen with charming Ethel Clayton in the starring role. Miss Clayton is at her best in this production, which will be shown at the Liberty theatre last times tonight! ----------- Jerome K. Jerome, Author To those who know literature and drama, Jerome K. Jerome needs no introduction. “Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow,” is a collection of humorous essays that has pleased thousands. “The Passing of the Third Floor Back,” is a drama made immortal by the deathless acting of Sir Johnston Forbes-Robertson. “Miss Hobbs” proved one of Mr. Jerome’s greatest successes. On Broadway it was the comedy triumph of its period. It has a lilting comedy touch that intrigues the laugh-wells of the most incurable grouch, and will present Wanda Hawley in her first independent production at the Rialto theatre tomorrow. JACKSON COUNTY WATER PERMITS FILED AT SALEM During the months of June and July, 91 permits to appropriate water for the irrigation of 3120 acres of land, municipal supply, domestic and mining and other purposes and three permits to construct reservoir were issued by the state engineer, Percy A. Cupper. In Jackson county the following permits were issued: To Mr. George Hargadine of Ashland, Oregon, covering the appropriation of water from Willow Creek for irrigation of three acres of land. To M. L. Pruitt of Eagle Point, covering irrigation of water from a tributary of Little Butte Creek for irrigation of 45 acres of land, at an estimated cost of $750. 00. To Hugo C. A. Von der Hellen of Welles, Oregon, covering the appropriation of water from Antelope creek for irrigation of eighty acres. This development will cost approximately $1000, and covers the construction of three-fourths of a mile of canal. To H. L. Hervford of Butte Falls, Oregon, covering the appropriation of water from Willow Creek for irrigation of 140 acres of land. Approximately three-fourths of a mile of canal will be constructed under this permit. News from 100 years ago
