COLLEGE BASKETBALL Before leading Ducks, Young studied Mariota Comment By Connor Letourneau The Oregonian MailTribune.com By Connor Letourneau The Oregonian Posted Jan. 4, 2015 @ 5:17 pm By Connor Letourneau The Oregonian Posted Jan. 4, 2015 @ 5:17 pm » Social News EUGENE — During the Oregon football team's Rose Bowl rout of Florida State, Joseph Young sat in front of his TV and studied. The senior men's basketball guard pinpointed how quarterback Marcus Mariota spoke to younger players after rough plays. He noted the Heisman Trophy winner's unflappable demeanor; the way Mariota takes the same approach no matter the stakes. Two days later, Young took what he had learned into the 343rd Civil War. He played with poise reminiscent of his gridiron counterpart, shepherding an inexperienced group to a 71-59 win over Oregon State before 7,314 at Matthew Knight Arena. When freshman teammates appeared nervous before tipoff, Young told them to enjoy the moment. When the Beavers trimmed a double-digit deficit to two points by halftime, he stressed the importance of composure. "I just wanted to get the ball in my hand and slow it down," Young said. Leadership was evident in each timely bucket. Throughout the contest, Young exposed OSU's 2-3 zone. He answered mini Beavers rallies with devastating 3-pointers. When defenders overcompensated along the perimeter, Young knifed through the lane for easy layups. He finished with a season-high 27 points on 10-of-15 shooting, including 5-of-6 beyond the arc. Forward Elgin Cook, who poured in 18 points and nine rebounds, was a worthy sidekick. "Joe did a great job," Ducks coach Dana Altman said. "He was the difference in the game tonight." Most mornings, Young shoots Oregon's five freshmen a group text. Saturday's message was brief: "New season." Fresh off overtime wins over UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine, Young was intent on opening the conference slate with a victory. He shouldered a heavy load so the roster's 10 newcomers could ease into Pac-12 play. As OSU stagnated early, Young powered the Ducks to a quick 14-2 lead. But the Beavers eventually seemed to regain their confidence. After shooting 2-of-18 from the field, OSU closed the half on an 18-9 run to enter the break down 29-27. Young saw his cue. He capitalized on defensive miscues, drilling three 3-pointers and attacking the rim when possible. The reigning All-Pac-12 selection scored 11 of Oregon's first 15 second-half points to help push the Ducks' lead into double digits. With little more than 13 minutes left, Beavers guard Gary Payton II nabbed a steal and raced down court for a slam. But he misjudged the angle on the dunk, sending the ball clanging off iron. Oregon guard Ahmaad Rorie's 3-pointer moments later sent green-clad fans to their feet. In three minutes, an 11-0 Ducks (11-3, 1-0 Pac-12) run had secured a 49-35 lead. OSU (9-4, 0-1), a team devoid of a go-to scorer, couldn't muster much of a counterpunch. It avoided the blowout, but never again trailed by fewer than eight points. Guard Langston Morris-Walker led three Beavers in double figures with 16 points. "Midway through the first half we found a rhythm and we fought back," Payton said. "We didn't come out that way in the second half, and they got the lead and finished it out." On Saturday, the Ducks defended their home court against a team picked to finish last in the conference. Tougher tests remain on the horizon. Oregon, which returns to school today, hosts No. 8 Arizona on Thursday. It will need a more complete performance to oust a Wildcats squad filled with five-star talent. Against OSU, the Ducks tallied more turnovers (14) than assists (10). They were completely dependent on Young for stretches, a luxury future opponents surely won't allow. Oregon's top option realizes as much. So Young hopes to spend coming days improving as a defender and facilitator, aspects of his game he believes are often overlooked. It's all part of embracing a leadership role on a youthful team. Last year, the Ducks benefited from the well-meaning voice of Johnathan Loyd. With the point guard out of basketball eligibility, Oregon spent much of nonconference play searching for someone to fill Loyd's void. At times, Young said, the Ducks seemed rudderless. Recently, he had the chance to pick Mariota's brain. The two didn't discuss leadership, Young said. It wasn't necessary. Young needs only watch an Oregon football game to see influence embodied.
