The trail to 39-year-old Joseph Apolinar Garcia and 18-year-old Javier Manuel Morales — who allegedly broke into at least 16 vehicles — started with a pair of stolen 2006 Suzuki quads. The owner of the two off-road vehicles heard them fire up at about 5:30 a.m. Monday as two people stole them from his Wellington Drive home, off Springbrook Road. The vehicles were later seen across town on a gravel section of Maple Park Drive. Tire tracks had been left behind. "Some of those tracks were leading directly onto a particular property," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said . That property, a home in the 1000 block of Maple Park Drive, is where police said they found a small, lowered, Dodge pickup, a match for a vehicle seen in the oft-viewed surveillance video police had been parsing frame by frame. In the video, three men wearing hooded sweatshirts and backpacks exit the truck and canvass the Creek View Drive neighborhood early Sunday morning. They break into vehicles and make off with electronics, money, wallets, sunglasses, CDs and a grab bag of other items left inside. Break-ins were reported along Creek View Drive, Alameda Street, Century Way, Ashford Way, Sherwood Park Drive, La Loma Drive and Jessica Circle. In most cases, the vehicle doors were left unlocked, though at least one had a window smashed. Police obtained a search warrant and have since found 45 pieces of property reported stolen from vehicles, though police said they're still working to determine whether it was all from the most recent spree. "It's a mixed bag of stuff," Budreau said. "There's sports equipment, a baseball bat, baseball glove, lots of purses, IDs and credit cards, electronics." The stolen quads were found in a vacant lot in the 1000 block of West Second Street, less than a mile from Maple Park Drive. Morales was arrested on 16 counts of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle and second-degree theft. He remained in the Jackson County Jail today on $68,000 bail, jail records show. Garcia was arrested on second- and third-degree theft charges and two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm because of two guns found in the Maple Park Drive home. He was no longer listed in the jail Tuesday morning. Police also have a third suspect, though they have not arrested him yet and declined to release his name until they do. Whether the men are also linked to other recent Rogue Valley car break-ins — nearly 50 were reported over President's Day weekend around Medford and close to 40 in Central Point last Tuesday — remains to be seen, police said. Budreau said some property from the Central Point break-ins was found at the Maple Park Drive home, however. "We're still following up on this case, looking over some stolen property," Budreau said. "A lot of property takes some time to figure out which case it belongs to." Detectives continue to remind people to lock their cars and keep valuables out of them.
