Knights, Mustangs foil each other's bid to climb standings MERLIN -- Archrivals North Valley and Hidden Valley hurt each other's chances for a state playoff berth when they split a Skyline Conference doubleheader Saturday. North Valley (12-9, 9-8 Skyline) persevered with an 8-7 eight-inning victory in the opener, while Hidden Valley pounded out a 14-4 win in the nightcap. The teams are tied for fourth in the Skyline standings, trailing third-place Henley (11-6) by two games with four conference outings remaining. The top three teams in the conference advance to the 3A playoffs. "Neither of us got any help from splitting," said North Valley coach Mike Reese. "We both badly needed a sweep. Now there's no room for any more losses." Senior Luke Godfrey played an important role in North Valley's Game 1 win. Godfrey pitched a complete game and went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Godfrey surrendered a game-tying home run to Seth Pietsch in the seventh, but Scott Butterbaugh delivered the winning hit with an RBI single in the eighth. "Luke had a great day," said Reese. "He was not going to let me take the baseball from him. He made some big pitches." In the second game, Dan Kennedy paced the Mustangs with three hits, including a three-run homer in the fourth, and four RBIs. Hidden Valley seniors Ryan Wilson and Pietsch each added a pair of hits.
