The Rogue Elk fire started near Highway 62 just before 4 p.m. and burned less than 4 acres of land before it was stopped, Oregon Department of Forestry spokesman Dennis Turco said. "They had a lot of wind up there," Turco said. The fire was 90 percent contained by 6 p.m. Crews from ODF and Jackson County Fire District No. 4 battled the blaze from the ground. Moments after crews arrived at the scene, they called on helicopters to assist, Turco said. "(The terrain) wasn’t terribly steep," he said. "I think the main problem was that it was burning in some pretty heavy brush and scattered timber." Advertisement The cause of the fire was under investigation late Friday. At one point, the fire appeared to be moving toward a home northeast of the blaze, Turco said. A power pole caught fire, downing wires in the area, Pacific Power spokesman Dave Kvamme said. A total of 2,650 customers in Trail and Shady Cove lost power at 3:52 p.m. All but about 10 of those had power restored by 4:47 p.m., Kvamme said. Earlier Friday, smoky skies were seen in Jackson County near the California border, the result of an 84-acre agricultural burn in northern Siskiyou County, according to ODF.
