Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend June 29, 2005 Mentor grant aims to aid Hispanics The Oregon Community Foundation has given a $15,000 grant to Rogue Community College to build a leadership and mentoring program that encourages Hispanic youth to finish high school and go to college. The program, established last year, is known as the Oregon Leadership Institute. RCC students in the program take a three-credit class on leadership and mentoring and put their studies into practice working with teens. They help with a monthly academy for high school students and check in with kids to make sure they are on track academically and planning for college. The academy focuses on cultural roots and heritage, career and college exploration, leadership skills and personal responsibility, organizers said. Students participate in an outdoor challenge course and finish with a graduation ceremony. This year 11 college students mentored 24 high school students from Phoenix, South Medford and Eagle Point high schools. Over the next three years, the program will involve 41 college students and 80 to 95 high school kids, college officials said. The Portland-based Oregon Community Foundation, established in 1973, manages charitable funds donated by individuals, families and businesses to enhance quality of life in their communities. The foundation’s endowment consists of more than 1,000 funds with combined assets of more than $500 million.
