Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 19, 2005 ODFW collecting public comment on numbers of tags By MARK FREEMAN Mail Tribune The number of white-tailed buck deer tags for this fall is one of a host of hunts statewide whose tag numbers are still up for public comment. The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission is scheduled to set big-game tags for 2005, and new hunts for 2006, during its June 10 meeting in Salem. Until then, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is collecting final public comment on the various numbers of tags it will offer on hunts during the upcoming controlled hunt lottery drawing, which is scheduled to begin as soon as the tag numbers are set. Results will be available in mid-June. Hunters already have applied for tags in the various hunts, but tag numbers are set in June after the commission takes into account spring census counts and tag recommendations by ODFW biologists. Advertisement Locally, no new antlerless black-tail or Roosevelt elk tags have been proposed. The agency has proposed a new youth black-tail hunt for the Applegate Unit sporting an estimated 25 tags and running during the Christmas break. Elsewhere, the ODFW has recommended controlled buck tags for mule deer at similar levels as last year, while low fawn ratios have led regional ODFW biologists to recommend slight decreases in tags for some units. Similarly, the proposal reduce the overall number of controlled rifle tags for Eastern Oregon’s Rocky Mountain elk are based on low calf recruitment and dips in elk populations. However, several new antlerless elk hunts are proposed for 2006 as an attempt to resolve localized elk-damage complaints on agricultural and managed timberlands. For pronghorn, various hunts could see increases by as many as 90 tags as buck and fawn ratios continue to increase. As bighorn sheep populations continue to grow in eastern Oregon, the ODFW has proposed an overall tag increase of 9 percent in units sporting sheep hunts. Six tags in five hunt areas are proposed this year for Rocky Mountain goats, whose 1-in-1,000 chance makes it the toughest tag to draw.
