They have images of Instagram moments of their adorable little puppy cuddling with their cute little baby. While this might be great in theory and in staged YouTube videos, the reality is you will end up with two babies that will both wake up in the middle of the night and cry, two babies that will need to be housebroken, and two babies that will destroy your house with the force of an indoor cyclone. The worst part though, is the possibility that someone might stop you on the street when you are walking the dog and carrying the baby and tell you how cute the puppy is but they won’t say a word about the kid. We waited until our kids were 3 and 5 to get a dog. It worked out great for us. Not only did the dog eat all the food my kids dropped on the floor, but he licked the kids’ faces clean. Although I liked the dog well enough when we got him, I never expected that within a matter of months, he would actually become my favorite “child.” In fact, by the time my kids became teens, I had written them out of my will and left everything to the dog. Sadly, several years ago our dog passed on to that great doghouse in the sky. Then we got another dog. Although I never thought I could love another dog as much as our first one, I’ve actually grown to love this dog, too, and not so surprisingly, there are times I also like him better than my kids. All shedding aside, he’s a darn good dog and when people ask me why I prefer the dog to the kids, I tell them: 1. My dog doesn’t have opposable thumbs. This means I don’t have to yell at him to stop texting at the table or stop killing zombies on the Xbox or stop checking Facebook. Of course I never have to yell at my kids to stop licking themselves in inappropriate places, so it may be a draw. 2. My dog will eat anything he finds in his bowl. He will also eat anything he finds on the floor, on the counter, in the laundry basket, or outside, dead or alive. Not that I want my kids to eat slugs and rocks, but something other than pizza chicken nuggets once in a while would be nice. 3. My dog doesn’t beg for every new gadget he sees on TV. He is perfectly happy to play with a dirty sock all day. And then have it for dinner. 4. My dog doesn’t take money out of my wallet without asking me. But then again, my kids don’t drool into my handbag. Well, not anymore, anyway. 5. My dogs think my jokes are funny. I don’t know this for sure, but he doesn’t groan and roll his eyes when I tell a joke, so I’m assuming he finds me funny. My kids will actually laugh sometimes, too. As long as I bribe them with candy. 6. My dog doesn’t mind if I smell bad or pass gas. In fact, I’m pretty sure this makes me more popular with him. 7. My dog was housebroken in three months. It took my kids three years to get potty-trained. On the flip side, I don’t have to follow my kids around with a poop bag. Well, not anymore, anyway. 8. My dog doesn’t whine about doing homework. Probably because he doesn’t get any homework. He does, however, chew up the kids homework, but only if they leave it on the floor (see reason No. 2). 9. My dog thinks I’m cool. He never tells me I embarrass him with my singing, or my pants look like “mom jeans,” or my socks taste funny. Actually my kids don’t do that last one either. 10. My dog loves me unconditionally.
