PREP ROUNDUP St. Mary's boys clinch regional golf title Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM Posted May. 13, 2015 at 2:00 AM » Social News BLUE RIVER — St. Mary’s pulled through with one of its best rounds of the season to again fend off Cascade Christian and earn the boys golf crown at the Class 3A/2A/1A Special District 4 regional tournament at Tokatee Golf Club on Tuesday. Individual champion Jeremy Wu carded a 1-under-par 71 to highlight the second day of action for St. Mary’s and, with his combined score of 147, finished one stroke ahead of runner-up Jake Quast of Cascade Christian. Helping the Crusaders cause was a second-round 72 by Brandon Chun, who finished in a three-way tie for third place among the individuals at 151 with St. Mary’s teammate Joshua Wu and Oakridge’s Gerry Snyder. Matt Johnson of the Crusaders posted his second straight 86 to round out the Crusaders’ effort. Peaking at the right time, St. Mary’s will look to secure a state-record fifth straight state championship next week as the likely favorite in the Class 3A/2A/1A state tournament at Quail Valley Golf Course in Banks. Cascade Christian, which placed second to St. Mary’s at last year’s state tourney, figured to give the Crusaders a challenge in the regional but came up just short despite the solid performance by Jake Quast. The Challengers’ Max Davis finished sixth among the individuals with a two-day total of 154 after his 78 on Tuesday, while Ben Quast finished ninth at 160 overall. Michael Clark rounded out the scoring for Cascade Christian at 166. St. Mary’s, Cascade Christian and Oakridge all advanced to the state tournament. CASCADE CHRISTIAN (628): Jake Quast 73-75—148, Max Davis 76-78—154, Ben Quast 83-77—160, Michael Clark 85-81—166. 6A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 REGIONALS: At Blue River, South Medford’s Alex Brown qualified first among the individuals in competition Monday at Tokatee Golf Club and will join Panthers teammate Reese Fisher at next week’s Class 6A boys golf state tournament. South Medford freshman Kirsten Reed also qualified for state after tying for the second-best round during the girls golf regional tournament. Brown shot a 5-over-par 77 to lead all scorers at the regional, finishing two strokes ahead of Willamette’s Connor Drath, Roseburg’s Jared Misfeldt and Thurston’s Andrew Watts. Fisher, a sophomore, was an automatic qualifier to the state tournament after leading the Southwest Conference with a 75.5 stroke average this season. West Salem (313) finished nine strokes ahead of Grants Pass (322) to win the regional, and both teams will advance with regular-season SWC champion Sheldon and Greater Valley Conference champion West Albany to state. Reed carded a 96 to finish tied for second with McMinnville’s Kaela Worden. West Albany’s Hannah Bush shot an 89 to earn the regional crown, while Roseburg (358) and Grants Pass (365) advanced to state as the top two finishers at the regional. South Medford’s girls team finished fifth with a 409 after Abi Borg (103), Emmie Starchvick (105) and Kierra Cano (105) rounded out the scoring. Sheldon and South Salem had already qualified for state as regular-season conference champions. 5A SPECIAL DISTRICT 2 REGIONALS: At Redmond, Eagle Point’s Ethan DeVore shot a second-round 75 to finish 13th overall among the individuals and help the Eagles climb to fifth place overall on the final day of the 14-team regional tournament at Eagle Crest Resort. DeVore’s two-day total of 160 wound up leading the Eagles after he improved 10 strokes from his Day 1 total, with teammate Troy Jordan showing steady play with an 81 and 82 to finish 19th overall at 163. T.J. Ferreira carded a second-round 90 and finished with a 194 total to pace Ashland, which was 11th overall. Crater’s Mike Piazzini shot an 82 on Day 2 to post a 170 and pace Crater, which finished 13th. CRATER (859): Mike Piazzini 88-82—170, Steven Renfro 121-105—226, Brenden Dismukes 115-114—229, Ty James 122-112—234. 4A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 REGIONALS: At Eagle Point, Phoenix’s Tyler Crawford scored a personal-best 91 on the second day of the regional tournament and led the Pirates with a 194 total after two rounds at Eagle Point Golf Club. Phoenix’s Devin Wenaus also set a pearson best with his 98 on Day 2 to help pace the Pirates, who finished with a two-day total of 871. Klamath Union’s Craig Ronnie finished at 143 overall to edge Mazama’s Bryce Wortman by one stroke in the individual competition. Marshfield ran away with the team crown with a combined 664, while Hidden Valley was second at 718. Boys Tennis 4A/3A/2A/1A SPECIAL DISTRICT 3 REGIONALS: At Sisters, St. Mary’s qualified singles player Pratheev Weerakoon and the doubles team of Ian Newton and Zack Lewis to next week’s state tournament after each posted top-four finishes in the regional qualifier at Sisters High. The Crusaders finished second overall to North Bend in the team competition by five points, 33-28. Weerakoon advanced to the semifinals before falling in straight sets to eventual champion Jacob Mangan of Henley. He rebounded to edge Colin Reinert of Sisters in the third-place final, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Newton and Lewis advanced to the semifinals but settled for fourth place in doubles to earn their bid to the state tourney. Also for St. Mary’s, Tyler West won the consolation singles bracket and the team of Quinn Randle and Jonas Glatte won the consolation doubles bracket. The Crusaders’ No. 4 doubles team of Chama Levine and Ryan Loos advanced to the quarterfinals before being eliminated. Cascade Christian’s Nathan Moir advanced to the consolation singles semifinals but came up short to North Bend’s River Morse, 8-4.
