Mustangs rout Redding, then drop nightcap The Medford Mustangs legion baseball team labored through an inconsistent doubleheader performance on Sunday at Miles Field. The Mustangs used a nine-run fourth-inning to pull away for a 13-2, five-inning win in the opener but struggled to produce runs in a 9-5 nightcap loss to the Redding Tigers. Travis Dunlap blasted a two-out, solo home run in the first-inning and Matt Skundrick and Dan Bruce each added three-run doubles in the fourth to give Brent Kircher his first pitching win of the summer season. Kircher gave up five hits and yielded two runs, both unearned, for the win while Brian Edwards entered in the fourth and threw no-hit ball over two innings with four strikeouts. Skundrick led Medford with a 3-for-3 performance while Dunlap and Phil Ouellette each added two hits apiece. In Game 2, the Tigers blew open a tight game with four runs in the sixth-inning. Edwards took the blunt of the attack giving up all four runs on four hits and two walks. Ouellette, who went 6-for-7 over both games, led the Mustangs with four hits in as many appearances. Shawn Backstrom added three hits while Bruce went 2-for-3. The Mustangs fell to 2-3 on the season and host a 6 p.m. game today against the Chico Nuts at Miles Field.
