South boys overcome adversity, Roseburg ROSEBURG � The South Medford boys soccer team survived a bus breakdown that resulted in a late start and shook off the effects of having only one day�s rest to take out Roseburg 2-0 on Friday in Southern Oregon Conference boys soccer. The Panthers needed almost the entire game to get things going, then managed to put together two late goals. Justin Baldone ended the scoreless tie in the 68th minute with a goal off an assist by Daniel Potter. Just four minutes later, Chris Miller knocked home an insurance score off a corner kick. Goalie Kyle Hadley picked up his fourth SOC shutout and seventh overall as the Panthers improved to 8-3-1 overall and 5-0 in SOC play. Roseburg fell to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in conference. Volleyball SAN DIEGO � The South Medford volleyball team split two games Friday to finish second in Pool A and advance to the Silver bracket at the two-day California Challenge Tournament. The Panthers lost the opening game of the day to Maricosta, Calif., the top-ranked team in the nation, 15-4, 15-6, 15-2, then bounced back to take out Redlands, Calif., 15-2, 2-15, 15-13, 15-11 to move on. The Gold bracket features eight teams ranked 1-8 in California. "We�re real excited to be here," said South Medford coach Jerry Hagstrom of the tournament, considered one of the top three tourneys in the nation. "Finishing second in our pool is quite an accomplishment." Crystal Glover had 12 kills in the second match while Amber Hunt added five aces. Kellie Thomas also had five kills against Redlands. The Panthers begin double-elimination bracket play today at 9 a.m. ST. MARY�S WINS DOUBLEHEADER � At Oakland, the second-ranked St. Mary�s volleyball team took a non-conference doubleheader from seventh-ranked Oakland, 15-12, 13-15, 15-3 in Game 1 and 10-15, 15-10, 15-8 in the finale. Kristin Zielony led the way with 22 digs, 27 kills and eight aces on the day while Melissa Anderson and Jenny Gritsch added 25 and 18 digs, respectively. Senior setter Lani Brophy added 56 assists while Libby Trum pitched in with 10 kills and 24 digs. The Crusaders improved to 17-3 overall and remain 6-0 in SCL play. PROSPECT, NORTH LAKE SPLIT � At Prospect, Prospect won the first match, 15-6, 11-15, 15-4, of a Skyline A League doubleheader, which was necessitated by a scheduling mixup earlier in the season. North Lake took the second, 5-15, 15-13, 15-9. Addie Stockebrand was 10-for-13 serving with three aces and six assists in the first match for the Cougars. Sarah Gordon had five kills. In the second match, Stockebrand was 12-for-12 serving with seven aces and added 11 assists. Prospect is 5-8, 4-6 in the Skyline A League. ELKTON 16-15, BUTTE FALLS 14-5 � At Elkton, Butte Falls jumped out to a 7-0 lead in Game 1 but couldn�t hold on while dropping a nonconference game to Sky A Northern Division foe Elkton. Freshman Asia Million led the Loggers with four service aces on the night as Butte Falls dropped to 8-3 overall and remained 7-0 in Sky A Southern Division play .
