CONDUCTS EXPERIMENTS IN PEAR PICKING C. C. Cate is conducting a series of experiments to determine the proper time to pick the Rogue river valley pears. The tests are made by determining at stated intervals the sugar content of pears. Check is made on pears picked the same date and placed in cold storage. The shriveling is noted and between shriveling and sugar content a check can be made to determine the proper time to pick. The effort is to get a "hard green" that can be picked without danger of shrivel. Mr. Cate also hopes to determine the earliest point at which the pears can be picked most profitably. It is likely, he thinks that if his tests had been known, the pears of this year's crop could have been picked early and most of the loss due to last night's wind storm averted. The results of the experiments will be put into final form and final results made public within two or three weeks in form to guide next year's picking. SOCIETY Southerners from all over the valley were in attendance when President John Dill of the Dixie association called the meeting to order and requested M. C. Reed, chairman of the program committee to preside. R. P. Campbell, "Dick Posey," opened with a reading from James Whitcomb Riley. President Dill followed with a cordial welcome address. The response was given by Dr. T. B. Ford, chaplain of the editorial association and district superintendent of the Salem district of the M. E. church. Addresses by B. R. Greer and Geo. H. Himes completed the addresses on the program. Mrs. J. E. Stuart and Miss Helen Dahl entertained with a "Porch Party" Tuesday evening in honor of Miss Jean Budge and Miss Grace Martin. Miss Martin has been the house guest of Mrs. William Budge for the past week. Miss Budge and Miss Martin left Thursday evening for Berkeley where they will attend the fall term of school.
