SPRINGFIELD — Getting geared up for the Class 6A playoffs in an endowment game, the South Medford baseball team collided with another red-hot baseball squad. Behind strong pitching, Thurston had the upper hand Wednesday and won, 11-4, snapping the Panthers’ 17-game winning streak at Thurston High School. The Class 5A Colts (22-5) had been on a roll as well and picked up their 14th straight victory behind hard-throwing Decker Stedman, who was able to ratchet up his velocity into the lower 90s, according to Panthers coach Scott Carle. “We hadn’t seen a pitcher throw at that velocity in a little while,” said Carle, who will lead the Panthers into the opening round of the Class 6A playoffs Monday against a team to be determined. “We came out flat. Hopefully it lights a fire under them. Moving forward, I think we’ll regroup and we’ll be ready to get after it on Monday.” Jaylin Parnell hit a solo home run for the Panthers (21-4), Clint Campbell went 3-for-4 and had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings and Jacob Melton finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. The Cavemen, who finished fifth in the Southwest Conference, finished the year with a 10-17 record. BROOKINGS-HARBOR 11, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5: Brookings-Harbor tallied five runs in the first two innings for all the scoring it would need in the nonleague game. Cascade Christian (14-8) got 3-for-4 hitting from freshman Davis Federico. The Challengers host a Class 3A first-round playoff game Wednesday against an opponent to be determined. Austin struck out nine while allowing four hits and two walks for the Black Tornado (22-3), who host a first-round Class 6A playoff game Monday against an opponent to be determined. Kyleigh Lopez went 3-for-3 while Austin and Lauren Barry both finished 2-for-5. Barry and Kylie Baker each registered a triple. Eagle Point is 18-7.
