"I’ve got too many irons in the fire," said Doug Turner, 53, who has served on the council since he was appointed in 1999. "My regular work has just escalated." If approved, Turner’s resignation will be effective March 31, making him the third council member to resign in 10 months. Katrina Hill resigned in June, saying she wanted to tend to personal commitments. Jodi Riker-Yap resigned in May, expressing frustration over working with fellow council members. It’s coincidence, not disharmony, behind the high turnover rate, said Mayor Marian Telerski. "People’s lives change," she said, adding there’s no connection among the vacated seats. Telerski said she’s sorry to see Turner leave the council. He has been intelligent, even-tempered, experienced and upbeat, she said. "You could rely on him for a thoughtful position," she said. "He wasn’t looking to aggrandize himself. He was looking to serve the city." Yap, too, was sorry to hear the news. "He provides a quiet strength," she said. Yap said she did not know whether she would apply for the position but that she would "think about it." Turner said highlights of his 3½ -year tenure include planning improvements to Main Street, scheduled to begin this summer, through the urban renewal agency board; updating city ordinances; and hiring the city manager. But his job was expanding well beyond the 8-to-5 day, he said, and he was no longer able to stay up-to-date on Talent’s issues. "It was a regret to step down," he said. City Manager Betty Wheeler said the council is scheduled to consider Turner’s resignation at its March 19 meeting. "I’m assuming they won’t deny his request to resign," said Wheeler.
