GOLF ROUNDUP Ace helps Holmes expand Doral lead Comment By The Associated Press MailTribune.com By The Associated Press Posted Mar. 7, 2015 at 6:51 PM By The Associated Press Posted Mar. 7, 2015 at 6:51 PM » Social News DORAL, Fla. — J.B. Holmes and Dustin Johnson made aces on the same hole about 20 minutes apart Saturday at Doral, both with 7-irons from 207 yards and with a shot that reacted almost identically when it landed in the middle of the green and rolled up the slope and into the cup. Both pounded one 300-yard drive after another on a course where length is a huge advantage. And for a brief moment, they were separated by one shot. The difference turned out to be the shortest club in the bag. Holmes found his groove with the putter late in the round that carried him to four straight birdies and expanded his lead in the Cadillac Championship. Even with a bogey on the final hole at Trump National Doral, he had a 2-under 70 and was five shots clear of Johnson (69) and Masters champion Bubba Watson (70). "All you can really ask for is a chance to win on Sunday on the back nine," Holmes said. On a day of two aces, five other eagles on par 4s and even a scuba driver retrieving the 3-iron that Rory McIlroy heaved into the lake the day before, Holmes took some of the drama out of Doral with his late surge. The last time aces were recorded on the same hole in the same round on the PGA Tour was at Liberty National in 2013 at The Barclays. That was K.J. Choi and Greg Chalmers, and neither was in contention. This was different. What separated them was the finish. Johnson converted a birdie on the 16th hole to pull within one shot of Holmes, who was struggling. He made his second bogey on a par 5 when he pushed his tee shot into a hazard at No. 12. He had to scramble from a bunker to save par on the 13th. But moments after Johnson made his birdie, Holmes poured in a 12-foot birdie putt on the 14th, the first of four in a row. WEB.COM CARTAGENA: At Cartagena, Colombia, Ashland's Jason Allred rallied with some of the day's best play in the wind-battered Cartagena de Indias at Karibana Championship. Allred was 5 over in the second round and on the cut line when play was suspended Friday after his 13th hole. He finished the round Saturday morning, birdieing two of his five holes. He then played 15 holes in the third round at 2 under, climbing into a tie for 16th place when play was suspended due to darkness. He was one of three players who made the cut to be under par in the third round. HSBC WOMEN'S CHAMPIONS: At Singapore, South Korea's Inbee Park shot a 4-under 68 to take a two-stroke lead over top-ranked Lydia Ko and Stacy Lewis in the HSBC Women's Champions. The second-ranked Park had a bogey-free round to reach 13-under 203 on Sentosa's Serapong Course. PUERTO RICO OPEN: At Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Scott Brown birdied the final two holes for a 5-under 67 and a share of the lead with Chris Smith in the PGA Tour's wind-swept Puerto Rico Open. Brown, the 2013 winner, matched Smith at 6-under 2010 at Trump International-Puerto Rico. Smith had a 68. LEGENDS TOUR: At Sun City West, Ariz., Martha Nause shot a 5-under 67 on Saturday to take the first-round lead in The Legends Tour's season-opening Walgreens Charity Classic. Nause had seven birdies and two bogeys at Grandview Golf Course. Betsy King and Laurie Rinker were a stroke back.
