Monroe not only broke the meet record in the 3,000-meter run, he smashed it with his winning time of 8 minutes, 43.20 seconds. “The highlight of the night was definitely the 3,000 meters,” said South Medford head coach Tim Rupp. “The kid from Crater (Monroe), he’s pretty phenomenal.” Making the showing that much more impressive is who Monroe overtook for the meet record, and by how much. Monroe finished 29 seconds ahead of the pace set by former Crater and Portland State University runner Jake Keyser in 2005 (9:12.4). “Jake was a great runner, too,” said Crater distance coach Justin Loftus, “and his was a record that stood for a while with a lot of guys going after it the past 11 years.” Monroe’s performance was just one of many highlights at the Newland meet, which is for sophomores and freshmen and is designed to give young athletes a chance to perform on a big stage against kids their own ages. Sixteen teams participated, with the Grants Pass boys and girls sweeping the top spot for the second straight year. Last year’s runners-up, the South Medford boys and North Medford girls, also repeated their standing. “Every year it’s always great to see these younger kids get out and compete against kids their own age,” said Rupp. “It gives them a pretty good barometer to see where they stand against kids their age.” North Valley freshman Baylee Touey set the only other meet record by winning the 400 in 58.96. The previous record was set two years ago by North Medford’s Savannah Greenwade (59.21). Touey also won the 100 (12.81) and 200 (26.42). Eagle Point sophomore Ariana Marks came close to the girls record in the Custance Mile, covering the 1-mile event in 5:28.60 to finish just off the top mark set in 2010 by South Medford’s Sarah Kapple (5:27.38). Marks also went on to win the 3,000 in 11:08.60. Loftus said Monroe had designs on trying to repeat as the boys Custance Mile champion — he won in 4:33.2 last year — but the coach reined him in to save his legs for an upcoming meet. Loftus, however, may have been the only thing slowing Monroe on Friday. “He looked strong, for sure,” said the coach of Monroe’s personal-best outing. “He went out in like a 4:25 to 4:30 mile pace and wanted to see how well he could hold up by himself. He looked great through the mile and then slowed up a little the second mile but he still held strong.” Monroe essentially ran alone after Loftus asked Crater sophomore Erik Olsen to hold back a little in his run. Olsen still finished second in 9:17.70. The Comets also got a strong showing from sophomore Cal Duke, who won the 110 hurdles (17.00), 300 hurdles (42.30) and pole vault (11-0), while freshman Jantz Tostenson won the boys Custance Mile (4:35.89) and sophomore Derek Tripp won a well-contested 800 in 1:59.40 over Ashland’s Ian Rinefort (2:00.10) and South Medford’s Ty Boster (2:00.70). “Those guys all feed off each other and it makes it fun to coach,” said Loftus of the Comets. Ashland sophomore Aaron Chandler also had a solid showing, finishing first in the 200 (23.27) before being out-leaned at the tape by Ethan Moe of Grants Pass in the 400, 51.29 to 51.30. Chandler was also part of the winning long relay team. North Medford freshman Caleb Forte won the 100 (11.92) and was part of the winning 4x100 relay team (46.23) with Vincente Borja, James Royster and Elias Spence. South Medford’s boys shined in the field events, with sophomore Trent Snyder winning the shot put (44 feet, 5½ inches) and javelin (149-0) and freshman Cole Boster taking the discus (124-11). Cascade Christian sophomore Zach Booker, who already owns the school record in the triple jump at 43-2, won the long jump in 20-7 and was second to Grants Pass’ Tayler Phillips in the triple jump. On the girls side, St. Mary’s freshman Emma Bennion won the 100 hurdles (17.38) and 300 hurdles (47.82), while Cascade Christian sophomore Sarah Johnston prevailed in the shot put (35-1¼) and freshman teammate Abbey Alexander took first in the discus (100-5). North Medford sophomore M.J. Hamilton placed first in the long jump (15-0) and freshman teammates Kamaile Kaeo (javelin, 98-4) and Talia Baker (triple jump, 32-3) also won their events.
