PREP HOOPS: Eagles pull away to beat Pirates By Danny Penza Updated: Dec 13, 2022 10:28 PM A A 8 View all photos PHOENIX — After an even first quarter Tuesday night, the Eagle Point girls basketball team was slowly able to build a lead going into halftime. Come the third quarter, the Eagles ran away with it. Outscoring Class 4A Phoenix 19-6 in the third, Eagle Point turned a nine-point lead into more than twice that en route to a 54-39 victory over the shorthanded Pirates. “We went into our post player (Thianna Deng-Gomes) and we were able to get away from Phoenix at that point,” said Eagle Point head coach Marvin Denman of his third-quarter adjustments. “We had some other options and we wanted to extend our play, so once we did that then that opened up some things for other players.” Deng-Gomes, a sophomore, scored eight of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter to lead the charge for Eagle Point (4-1), which extended its winning streak to three games. With Tuesday night’s win, the Eagles are off to their best start to a season since 2018, when they started the year 5-2. “We’re happy about it,” said Denman. “It’s a long season and we have some really tough opponents. Our league is a really tough league. For our school and to be where we’ve been, to be over .500 like this is a bonus. We’re feeling good about ourselves, but we know we have a lot of work ahead of ourselves to try and get better. We’re trying to grow our game and get better and better.” After an even first quarter in which the two teams were tied 12-all, Eagle Point limited Phoenix (3-3) to four second-quarter points in building a 25-16 lead going into the break. “We felt pretty good at halftime, but the third quarter definitely took an Eagle Point swing, for sure,” said Phoenix head coach Chelsea Winner. “We had Morgan James, one of our senior captains and leaders, get into early foul trouble, so we had to sit her for quite a bit and that pretty much disrupted the entire flow of our offense and we just couldn’t move the ball very well. We just dug ourselves a little bit of a hole to start off the third quarter.” Indeed the Pirates did. With Deng-Gomes leading the way, the Eagles went on a 10-0 run in the early goings of the third quarter to take control of things. Eagle Point led by as many as 24 points in the third. “We ran out of time and if we had a fifth quarter maybe we could have caught them,” quipped Winner. “We were in a pretty deep hole going into the fourth,” Eagle Point’s Kadence Lindstrom also finished in double figures with 11 points, while Kady Ledbetter chipped in nine points. Junior guard Anabell Delgado led Phoenix with 13 points, while Kynna Nolan added nine points and Mae Woodward had seven points and six rebounds. James added a team-high 11 rebounds. “We made some adjustments and we were really happy about the fact that we can coach them and make the adjustments,” said Denman. “We’re glad that they listen to us and able to execute. We’re asking them to do some things and they’re responding — and I think the biggest thing between this team and ones I’ve had before. We’re asking them to dig a little deeper and they’re able to do that. They’re young and they’re able to play together, and that’s really the beauty of it.” EAGLE POINT (54): Dole 6, Schauffler 0, R.
