LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Letters to the Editor, Aug. 6 Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Aug. 6, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted Aug. 6, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News Brexit and US election As a U.K. and U.S. citizen, it is significant the similarity between the Brexit vote in the U.K. and the current contest for the U.S. presidency. In the U.K., the people left behind by the general increase in prosperity since the recession of 2008 — the less well-educated and a plurality of the older generation — voted for Brexit. Brexit is not turning out well for the country since the currency, the pound sterling, has dropped about 15 percent against the American dollar and the country could be heading for a recession. A very similar constituency in the U.S. is opting to support Donald Trump and the Republican Party. The changes Trump is advocating are unsubstantiated, so are the American voters willing to take that chance? I hope that this country will not make the same mistake as happened in the U.K. Alexander W. Davie Medford How to stop killings On July 26, in Sagamihara Japan, a young Japanese man went on a stabbing rampage at a facility for the mentally disabled where he had been fired, killing 19 people and injuring 25, of whom 20 were listed as serious. This is another example that killings will continue in the world, even if all guns were banned and destroyed. The root cause of these vicious and merciless attacks are the hardened hearts of all human beings. Evilness will always be in this world because of evil harden hearts, and this evilness will always find a way to kill and maim. The only solution to this harden heart problem and the evilness that is associated with it, is for all humans to give their lives over to Jesus Christ. If you are willing to accept Jesus Christ into your life as Lord and Savior, your life will start changing to a more positive way. Over time, the evilness that is in the person's heart will go away. There is no other full proof and effective solution. All it takes to start this life changing process is to say yes to Christ, no to sin. Marty Koval Eagle Point I am troubled Did anyone notice that with all the fine rhetoric and heartfelt speeches these past two weeks, both conventions were equally fixated exclusively on America , its problems and its opportunities, as if we did not exist in a wider world? But we are inextricably involved in that world, as John Donne reminded us, “No man is an island, entire of itself ...” and if Greece or Italy or Spain is in dire economic trouble, “ask not for whom the bell tolls,” it tolls also for us. And a nuclear war, always a fearsome possibility, must be a world war, and our war. I am troubled by our provincialism, our nationalism, our expressed or implied “exceptionalsm.” Yes, we have been exceptionally lucky as a nation but too frequently we have become exceptionally arrogant. I have traveled on four continents and can say we are neither better nor worse than other people. Well, maybe the ancient Greeks were better; after all, they had a great teacher (Socrates) who said, “I am not a citizen of Athens or Greece, but of the world.” Lou Goldman Ashland The candidate they deserve A short article in the July 23 MT described the campaign for U.S. Senate from Louisiana of David Duke, a well-known advocate for bigotry and hate and a former KKK leader, who expresses great admiration for Donald Trump's presidential candidacy. Duke is running in the Republican primary in spite of objections from multiple Republican leaders. However, Duke has not been stopped from running as a Republican, a very clear message that bigotry continues to be very welcome in the Republican Party. Allowing Duke to run as a Republican provides legitimacy and a political home for bigotry, the same bigotry that Trump has exploited and encouraged in his campaign. The Republican Party craves bigoted voters as much as Trump craves the limelight. The Republican Party, in providing the political environment that has enabled Trump to thrive, now has the presidential candidate they deserve, their bigot in chief. Victor Mlotok Phoenix No handouts Millions of our people have stopped looking for work. The labor-force participation rate is 62.6 percent, which is 3 percent below the rate when Obama took office in January of 2009. This is a blight to our nation and something needs to be done soon. Andy Stern, financial head of the Service Employees International Union, believes the solution is to give Americans a universal basic income, "A form of Social Security in which everyone would regularly receive an unconditional sum of money from the government." Canada and Finland are experimenting with it and the idea is gaining attention in our nation. Common sense will tell you this will not work. The government check people receive comes out of the pocket of the people who are working, and they will finally realize they are being ripped off. If people can work and choose not to work, they shouldn't eat. Shame on them! Shame on us if we make it possible for them to take advantage of the hard-working Americans and steal from them. Gordon DeVos Medford The time has come Greg Walden must go! If you must elect a Republican, at least elect one that does not vote the straight party line, even when it's wrong! Find one that knows right from wrong!
