First half ends with loss for Tornado The first half of the Southern Oregon Conference volleyball season has been rough sailing for North Medford. And Tuesday's home match with Roseburg didn't help right the ship. The Indians knocked the Black Tornado to 2-5 in conference play with a 15-9, 17-15 win. The Indians improved to an SOC-best 7-0. North fell to 7-8 overall. Despite the loss, North Medford coach Ron Beick found positives heading into the second half of the SOC season. "Actually, we were significantly better in some areas than we have been so far this season," Beick said. "We missed a few key serves, but overall, both teams didn't play their best defensive games." The Tornado jumped to leads of 6-1 and 8-3, but a couple runs of unforced errors and the presence of Shannon Burmeister allowed Roseburg to pull ahead 9-7. In Game 2, the Indians jumped out 14-10 before North slipped into a 15-14 lead after key sideouts by Amy Bakker and Rachele Treger. The Black Tornado missed an opportunity to seal the win when Roseburg's Katie Kahn picked up a kill to turn the serve over to the Indians. "We have to work on being consistent," Beick said. "We show signs of being in control, then have some spurts of making some errors. But that's stuff we can work on." SOUTH MEDFORD 15-15, KLAMATH UNION 9-7 - At Klamath Falls, South Medford's Amanda Cox had seven kills and 14 digs in the Southern Oregon Conference match. Tasha Wright added five kills and Meagan Shanahan 14 digs for the Panthers (8-10, 3-4 SOC). Brittney Hunt was 11-for-12 serving and contributed seven service points. GRANTS PASS 15-8-15, EAGLE POINT 11-15-7 - At Grants Pass, Grants Pass was overtaken in the second game but responded in the third game behind Jessica Morton's serving to win the Southern Oregon Conference match. Eagle Point rallied from an 8-1 deficit to claim the second game, 15-8. In the third game, Morton, who also had eight blocks in the match, served the final eight points for the win. Ally Codington had 12 kills, Shanna Claflin seven and Ashley Bellum six for the Cavers. Bellum also chipped in 11 serves for disruption and 16 digs. For Eagle Point, which was hurt by 18 hitting errors on the night, Ashley Curtis had 10 kills and Dani Rouhier nine. Kacey Zundel added six kills, seven digs and an ace, while Ashley Fence contributed three kills. Teammates Tiffany Talbott had five digs and Julia Sobolik had two blocks and three kills.
