The Oregon Parks and Recreation Commission gave final approval Aug. 4 for $250,000 for Lewis Park in west Medford and $50,000 for Lone Pine on the east side as part of $5 million in grants for outdoor recreation facilities statewide. For Lewis Park, planned at Lewis and Eighth streets near the Black Bird Shopping Center, the money will help fund a BMX track, a jogging path, two basketball courts, a volleyball court, playground equipment, wetland enhancement, a rest room and a pavilion. The city will contribute an additional $1.25 million toward the park, but "it won’t be enough to build the whole thing," said Merlin McDaniel, design and construction manager with the Medford Parks and Recreation Department. At Lone Pine Park, next to the elementary school, the grant will help fund a water spray feature and a raised-bed community garden, among other features. The city will kick in another $336,000. Advertisement Construction on the two parks is set for spring 2006, said McDaniel. Michele Scalise, grants and contracts coordinator with the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, said one of the requirements for applicants was being ready to start work right away. "They’ll have until June 30, 2007, to complete the project," said Scalise. The lottery-funded grants will help finance 22 large projects around the state, ranging in cost from $54,952 to $500,000, and 15 small projects costing from $15,000 to $50,000. The matching grants were recommended by the parks department’s Local Government Advisory Committee and approved by the parks commission. The state parks department will announce the next round of Local Government Grants in February 2006. "I don’t think a lot of people realize that lottery money goes right back into their communities," said Scalise.
