BUSINESS ADVICE Speaker: Spend less time looking at screens Author Brian Tracy says successful people "don't fool around with social media" Comment By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Follow @@GregMTBusiness MailTribune.com By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Follow @@GregMTBusiness Posted Jan. 29, 2016 at 4:08 PM By Greg Stiles Mail Tribune Follow @@GregMTBusiness Posted Jan. 29, 2016 at 4:08 PM » Social News Employees tend to spend way too much time avoiding work, instead checking Facebook and whatever is trending on Twitter. "The average adult checks the Internet 145 times a day," said Brian Tracy, a New York Times best-selling author of books about how to get rich who will appear in Medford Tuesday. "It's almost like an addiction, they roll over in the morning and turn on the phone — if they've bothered to turn it off — and see spam. They'll be checking spam all day long." Tracy will join Chris Rollins, founding partner of the John Maxwell Team, for a leadership and business transformation workshop Tuesday in the Inn at The Commons in Medford. "Most successful people are focused all the time," Tracy said during a telephone interview. "Business owners have focus, focus, focus on making their customers happy so that they will buy again." Successful people work long, hard days, 50 to 60 hours a week and no less than six days, he said. "They don't fool around with social media," Tracy said. "When they're at work, they work the whole damn time. They get farther ahead, and by the end of the race all the others are fighting for second place." A generation of so-called "screenagers" has fallen into a trap of continually checking Facebook and other social-media profiles, he said, forcing them to take work home. "Unless you're in a specialized profession, you should check email twice a day," he said. "It's a great tragedy at work, because they're messing around wasting time. Screenagers are breathing it in and out, checking screens all day. When they get home at night. TV watching is on the decline because people grab their iPads and just peck away." While small- and medium-sized business owners and executives uniformly adhere to the principle that sales and marketing drive a company, Tracy said, the reality is they easily stray from their stated beliefs. "If you were to follow them around and monitor their activity," he said, "you would find they spend an average of 11 percent of their time on sales and marketing. They are so caught up in email, conversation, lunches and meetings, yet they think they are spending time on sales and marketing." Coming out of the Great Recession, Tracy said, business is more competitive than ever, with consumer tastes constantly changing. "You must be fast on your feet, flexible, accept new information and change quickly."
