William Clark Smith, 34, of the 2500 block of Cady Road in Jacksonville, also must pay $7,404 in fines and restitution and serve at least 180 days in the Jackson County Jail for a long string of crimes in 2013 and 2014. "Your life is spiraling out of control. You're a danger to the community when you are out on the streets," Jackson County Circuit Judge Kelly Ravassipour said during Smith's sentencing this week. Smith was stopped for driving under the influence of intoxicants in 2013, then followed that up with an arrest in January 2014 for shoving a woman in Jacksonville and smashing her vehicle with a 2-by-4 piece of lumber and jumping on the hood, according to an affidavit and court records. In March 2014, he was stopped for another DUII by Jacksonville police. In an affidavit, Jacksonville Police Department Officer Marc Slagle wrote, "When Smith was told he was being arrested for DUII, he tried to bribe me by stating, 'What can I do to make this go away? $200? How about a nice dirt bike?" Slagle said Smith pointed to a dirt bike in the back of his pickup truck. When Smith was supposed to provide a urine sample for drug testing in relation to the DUII, he instead spit a mouthful of water into the urine collection bottle. "He then tried to pass the water off as his urine sample along with a few drops of urine he had produced, but admitted to the tampering after he was called on it," Slagle wrote. Smith's transgressions continued in July 2014, when he wouldn't stop for a traffic violation and instead sped away on his motorcycle in excess of 100 mph through Medford, according to an affidavit. "This is quite the spree over a number of months. The attempt to elude was in downtown Medford," said Smith's defense attorney, Christine Herbert. "He realizes it could have been a lot worse."
