Medford police said the "bizarre" case began at 8:50 p.m. when Jessica Wimberly walked into a Jeanette Street home uninvited and sat down. Residents of the home didn't know her, but said she told them her name was Jessica and acted like she was under the influence of some kind of drug, police reported. "She seemed just out of it, based on the statements," Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau said. "She wasn't aggressive or confrontational." The residents ultimately ushered Wimberly out of the house and she continued to walk on Jeanette toward Main Street as they called police. An officer arrived and spotted her sitting on a bench on West Main Street. Wimberly stood and started walking away, then quickened her pace and started running across West Main. Police said a westbound SUV narrowly avoided striking her, but an eastbound car slammed into her while traveling at about 30 to 35 mph. Wimberly flew up, struck the windshield and rolled off. "The driver had no way to avoid striking (her)," Budreau said, adding there will be no charges filed against the driver. Investigators from the Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction team responded to the scene, along with police and an ambulance. Wimberly sustained serious injuries, including a strike to the head. She was transported to Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center, where she was initially listed critical condition, according to police.
