I regret to say that he is wrong about welcoming the Coquille Tribe to our community, not because they are undesirable (which they aren’t), or do not have roots in the Rogue Valley (which is debatable). The issue is whether we should allow a casino to locate in Medford, and I would have the same objection to the Cow Creek Tribe opening one here. The fact is that we don’t need the problems associated with a casino in our town, which include traffic congestion, increased public safety issues and social effects of problem gambling (a subject with which I have a personal painful history.) The argument that a casino will create new employment can be refuted. As local lottery outlets such as Purple Parrot inevitably close because of competition for gambling dollars, loss of those jobs will unfortunately offset the gain of casino jobs. I would support any enterprise undertaken by the Coquilles except for this one, which is a bad idea on many levels. Michael Mace Medford Support police Two more law enforcement officers were gunned down last week, one in California and one in Wisconsin. How many such killings will it take before police officers are given the respect they deserve, which ultimately protects them from harm and protects us, as well? When people say how bad the police are, crazies everywhere feel emboldened. Please don’t feel sorry for criminals, and give more energy to helping law enforcement do their jobs. It serves all of us well. Do police officers make mistakes? Of course. Everyone makes mistakes. The difference is that most people aren’t in such dangerous jobs in the first place. They don’t have to listen for every sound and worry about who’s around the next corner with a weapon trying to kill them. I have to wonder how much longer young men and women will go into police work, knowing they don't have the backing of the people they protect on the mean streets of most cities and towns. Would you want your kids or grandkids becoming police officers, putting their lives at risk on a daily basis, with no one knowing what's going to happen next? Would you? Michael is extremely passionate about the direction of public education in our area, and has demonstrated a willingness to build relationships and listen to key stakeholders before making decisions that impact them. Michael is exactly the kind of thoughtful, engaging and committed leader our community needs on the school board right now, and he has my vote this May! Please join me in supporting Michael Campbell for Medford School Board, position 5. Jenna Dode Medford Are vaccines safe? How safe are vaccines? It is possible that doctors can inadvertently corrupt statistics on vaccine safety, by assuming serious adverse events after vaccinations are “coincidental” (not related to the vaccine) and will not report it to VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System). Our daughter developed a chronic coughing which lasted years and started the day after a vaccination. Several doctors we told asserted that it must have been a “coincidence,” not knowing anything about the details of the event — and said no more. Most people we know who don’t vaccinate have had similar experiences. People who don’t vaccinate their children are not ideologues following demagogues. Such people usually have tormenting stories to tell of serious adverse events happening to their child or someone’s child after vaccination. Mandatory vaccination for school children would bankrupt the schools. However, what should be mandatory is that doctors must report adverse events to the VAERS reporting system after vaccinations (how long afterwards to be determined by medical data researchers) regardless of whether attending doctors believe adverse events are related to vaccinations. Associating adverse events with vaccinations is determined by statisticians and medical data researchers, not attending doctors.
