Crusaders' Caplan wins 2A boys title MONROE - A hole-in-one one day, a state championship the next. It doesn't get any better than that. St. Mary's Nic Caplan completed the rare feat Tuesday when he shot a 6-over-par 78 at Diamond Woods Golf Course to secure the Class 2A-1A boys state golf championship. Caplan made a hole-in-one during Monday's opening round. Caplan's two-day total was 154, one stroke better than Santiam Christian's Ben Sisler. Santiam Christian's Ben Sisler finished third individually with a 159, and the Eagles walked off with team title with a 662 total. Blanchet finished second in the team chase with a 668 while Vernonia was third at 669 and Enterprise fourth at 688. Kane shot a 156 over the two days, while Astoria's Digger Cokley earned medalist honors with a 151. Hidden Valley's Sol Torrel finished 11th with a 157. The Mustangs (689) took seventh as a team behind first place Tillamook, which shot a 637. CLASS 4A GIRLS - At Corvallis, Ashland's Stephanie Johns fired a second-day 76 to finish tied for sixth in the Class 4A state tournament at Trysting Tree golf course. Southern Oregon Conference champion Roseburg, led by Heather Warner's 18th-place individual showing, earned eighth in the team standings with a 731 total. Bend won the state championship with a combined 647, 13 strokes better than second-place Barlow. Ashland's 781 total placed it 16th of 18 teams. Johns, a freshman who finished second at the conference district meet, was the SOC's highest finisher at Trysting Tree. Her two-day total of 158 was eight strokes off the pace. Lincoln's Cassie Castleman claimed the state crown with a 150. Glencoe's Molly Edmunds was one stroke back in second. North Medford's lone representative, freshman Kacie Kinney, ended with a 172 to tie for 29th with SOC medalist Jennifer Gaston of Roseburg. CLASS 3A-2A-1A GIRLS - At Redmond, Katie Mania shot an 84 and Jodi Luce carded an 86 Tuesday at Eagle Ridge as St. Mary's secured third place at the 3A-2A-1A girls tournament. Kerry Sullivan chipped in with a career-best 90 for the Crusaders. "I'm really proud of our girls because we struggled the first day," St. Mary's coach Bert Putney said. "The wind was blowing and we didn't handle it very well. But we came back strong today." Luce wound up 15th in the individual scoring and Mania was 17th. Phoenix, meanwhile, finished in eighth place. Sophomore Caroline Keating was the top individual finisher for the Pirates, carding rounds of 85 and 92 for 20th place. Marist totaled 663 strokes to win the team title by a whopping 46 shots over runner-up Molalla, which had 709. St. Mary's totaled 748 strokes, while Tillamook claimed the final trophy by finishing fourth with 752.
