The Comets fell to Poway of San Diego 47-15 in the championship dual after winning three matches earlier in the day. Senior Ron Lee was named outstanding wrestler for the upper weights after going undefeated in seven matches at 189 pounds. Three other Comets went undefeated as Charlie Alexander pinned all seven of his opponents at 275, Collin Brooks cruised at 171 and Chase Maloney defeated Turlock’s Austin Cronan, the 2004 California state champion, at 152. Crater defeated Turlock 55-6 and Clovis East 59-14 but got a much stiffer test from Vacaville, winning 33-25. Advertisement The Comets are now 7-1 in dual matches this season. SOUTH WINS CAMAS HOLIDAY INVITATIONAL — At Camas, Wash., South Medford sent six wrestlers to the finals and had 10 wrestlers in the top three to win the Camas Holiday Invitational. South scored 171.5 points to edge Pasco, Wash. (164) and host Camas (157). The Panthers were minus four starters from their regular lineup. Juan Aguilar (103 pounds), Chris Helman (135), Travis Harvey (140) and Dan Swift (152) all won their brackets at the eight-team tournament. Joe Ziegler (145) and Kenny Licea (160) were runners-up. The Panthers return home for a dual with defending Southern Oregon Conference champ Roseburg on Thursday and the South Medford Holiday Duals on Friday. NEWBERG WINS COAST CLASSIC — At North Bend, Ransom Portis-Cathers claimed the 189-pound title and four of his Newberg teammates claimed runner-up honors as the Tigers roared to the North Bend Coast Classic wrestling title. Newberg finished with 212.5 points, followed by Redmond with 167.5, Roseburg with 148.5 and Grants Pass with 131. Phoenix’s Ricky Farrell pinned Thurston’s Brice Arand in the 171-pound championship match. In a title bout between two local grapplers, North Valley’s Zach Giesen posted a 7-1 victory over North Medford’s Chris Platt at 160 pounds. NORTH MEDFORD 8, ASHLAND 3 — Gianni Assam turned in a hat trick to lead North Medford to a win over Ashland at the RRRink. The Black Tornado scored three goals in the third period to clinch the game as brothers Jason and Dustin Fender and Andrew DeKorte scored. Antti Pesso added a goal and an assist. Cody Schoonover scored two goals for Ashland. North goalkeeper Alex Orr faced 34 shots on goal. Swimming 13th ANNUAL NORTH BEND INVITATIONAL — At North Bend, Roseburg dominated both the boys and girls side of the meet. The best local performances were turned in by Justin Heath of Phoenix, who finished second in the 200 individual medley and third in the 100 butterfly, while Hidden Valley’s Melissa Pepitone took second in the 100 butterfly.
