The fire was reported at 12:39 a.m. at 2808 Alameda St. Medford Fire-Rescue battalion chief Erin Sawall said four engines were on scene in five minutes. Fire reportedly had spread from an area behind a woodstove in the home up a wall into the attic space. The home's three occupants made it outside safely. Sawall said a neighbor had seen thick smoke pouring off the structure and knocked on the front door, awakening the occupants. The home had smoke detectors, but reportedly did not go off. "The origin area was narrowed down to around the woodstove," Sawall said, adding the cause remains under investigation, but that the stove could be the culprit. "We have not ruled out any of that." Crews had the flames knocked down in about 10 minutes but had to remain on scene until about 4 a.m., chasing down hot spots in the attic and wall and making sure the fire didn't start up again. "It's a little bit more of a technical fire," Sawall said. "You've got to do a lot of work. You've got to get below the fire as well as above. "It takes extensive overhaul." The flames caused extensive damage to the attic space and a rear room. Sawall estimated anywhere between $10,000 and $20,000 in repairs will be necessary, including a new roof, wall and wiring.
