Mark Edward Winstead, 44, of the 3700 block of Amelia Way, White City, entered his plea today in Jackson County Circuit Court. A defendant who pleads no contest is not admitting guilt but acknowledges prosecutors likely would prove their case in a trial. A no-contest plea carries the same legal ramifications as a guilty plea. A charge of online sexual corruption of a child was dismissed in the plea agreement. An indictment alleged Winstead had used online communication to solicit a child to engage in sexually explicit conduct and he had agreed to physically meet the child. Winstead was sentenced to three years' probation and is not allowed to coach youths in any capacity as a condition of his probation for the sexual-abuse charge. He also must register as a sex offender. The Jackson County District Attorney's Office has 90 days to determine restitution, if any. Winstead said he had no comment about the case. "My client is remorseful for the situation he created," said defense attorney Donald Scales. "He did not want to put anybody through a trial." Winstead was arrested in January 2014 for having sexual contact in a vehicle with a 17-year-old girl from the Medford private high school's soccer team. The girl could not consent to the sexual contact because she was younger than 18, according to Medford police. The incident occurred during the 2013 soccer season. A parent of one of the girl's friends told police about the incident in December 2013, police said. After Winstead's arrest, Cascade Christian High School officials announced they would not hire him back as a coach for the school, where he had coached for three years. School officials said the school requires staff to take child-abuse identification and prevention training. Winstead had attended training and passed appropriate background checks.
