A campfire ban instituted for all Oregon state parks last week will continue for at least seven more days. The Oregon Parks & Recreation Department said the open flame ban, which applies to all fire pits, tiki torches and candles in state parks, will remain in place until at least Sept. 3. The ban does not necessarily apply to cooking stoves or charcoal briquette use, though local restrictions may also apply. Officials originally instituted the ban because of the sheer number of severe wildfires around Oregon and Washington. The numerous incidents have pulled resources away from local communities that would normally fight new fires that break out at state parks, potentially spelling disaster if a new fire breaks out in their absence. "The ban will be re-evaluated next week based on current wildfire status, weather and guidance from state and local fire officials," a news release from the parks department reads. Campfires are still allowed in fire rings in the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest. In Jackson County parks, a temporary campfire ban remains in effect at Howard Prairie's Lily Glen, Grizzly Creek, Willow Point, and Klum Landing campgrounds, along with numerous sites at the Oak Slope Campground at Emigrant Lake.
