Raider wrestlers rally to down Wildcats Raider roundup ASHLAND -- The Southern Oregon wrestling team utilized its potent upper-weight attack to post a 21-14 come-from-behind victory over Central Washington Friday night at McNeal Pavilion. The fourth-ranked NAIA Raiders opened their dual-meet schedule by spotting the 10th-ranked NCAA Division II Wildcats (1-1) 10 unanswered team points. Undaunted, SOU secured its sixth consecutive dual-meet victory dating back to last January by winning six consecutive bouts and scoring 21 straight team points. Returning national champion and top-ranked senior Josh Morton started the string with a 13-5 major decision over junior Matt Ballard at 165. The roll continued with junior Ryan Schumann's 13-1 major win over Joe Chaves at 174. Top-ranked Dan Sturgell overcame a 3-2 deficit in the final period to help SOU take the lead at 11-10 with his 9-2 decision over Chris Feist at 184. Third-ranked 197-pounder Devin Gray of Eagle Point and junior heavyweight Devin Cole followed with decisions, but the Raiders weren't out of the woods when freshman Nolan Harris stepped to the mat at 125. Needing a win to tip the balance, the former Sprague High standout answered the challenge with a dual-clinching 16-8 major decision over Nick Rodriguez. "Basically the dual meet was on the line at that point and he stepped up and got the job done," said Raider coach Mike Ritchey. Women's Basketball CALIFORNIA LUTHERAN 59, SOUTHERN OREGON 51 -- At Chico, Calif., Southern Oregon couldn't come back from a 25-point second-half deficit and suffered its first loss of the season in the four-team Coslet Classic. The Raiders (2-1) shot an anemic 14 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 32-15 at intermission. "In the first half we weren't able to make our shots and couldn't handle their defensive pressure," Southern Oregon coach Shirley Huyett said. "We didn't take advantage. We didn't do enough things to get to the free-throw line." The deficit grew to as much as 49-24 with 13 minutes to go. The Raiders cut the margin to 12 points with 4 minutes left and had a chance to get closer. But Southern made only 2-of-4 free throws on a flagrant and technical foul against the Kingsmen. Then the Raiders turned the ball over on the possession and Cal-Lutheran scored. "That was a momentum breaker," said Huyett. "We had a chance to put a lot of pressure on them." Lauren Mohan led the Raiders with 11 points and Melissa England added 10. Volleyball RAIDER NETTERS FALTER -- At Lewiston, Idaho, Southern Oregon's hopes for the school's first NAIA volleyball national tournament bid went out the window Friday at the regional tournament at Lewis-Clark State College. The Raiders absorbed a pair of five-game, pool-play losses in the six-team tournament and failed to make today's semifinals. The Raiders needed at least three wins at regionals to extend their season into the 20-team national tournament. Southern Oregon (23-11) lost to 13th-ranked Northwest Nazarene, 15-7, 13-15, 12-15, 15-11, 15-5 in its regional opener. The Raiders then dropped a 15-6, 12-15, 15-9, 11-15, 15-13 decision to third-ranked Western Oregon. Monica Fisher led Southern's front line with 18 kills in its opening match against Northwest Nazarene. Kacee Jacobson and Shelley Gorin added 17 kills each. In the second match, Jacobson and Fisher combined for 33 kills. Southern Oregon setter Erin Lytle, the Cascade Conference most valuable player, totalled 117 assists on the day.
