The fire, which also damaged the garage and attic space of the house, is considered suspicious by Medford police. "There's nothing else in there that the investigators thought could have caused it," said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau, adding evidence collected at the scene also points to the blaze being human-caused, though he declined to comment on specifics. The fire was reported at 8:39 p.m. in the 1200 block of Morrow Road, east of Biddle Road, in a vacant rental from which tenants had recently been evicted, police said. A witness reported hearing two loud bangs and looked outside to see the side of the house on fire. Medford Fire-Rescue responded with four engines and at least 12 firefighters. They arrived to see a pile of property stacked on the house's front porch, including furniture and mattresses, burning. Flames had also spread from the pile to the adjacent garage. "It was isolated to that area," Battalion Chief Erin Sawall said. Crews had the fire knocked down in about 10 minutes. One side of the house, the attic space and the garage were all damaged by the flames, and scorch marks had been left behind on portions of the house built with cinder blocks.
