The National Weather Service has registered 12.6 inches of rain and counting at its offices near the Medford airport since Dec. 1, making it the ninth-wettest in more than a century. Though we've had more than twice the rain we saw two winters ago — and 50 percent more than average — we're still well short of the record set in 1964-'65, the year of the famous Christmas flood along the Rogue River, when 17.2 inches of winter rain fell, according to the weather service. The next highest was 1958, which registered 14.92 inches of rain from Dec. 1, 1957 through February 1958. "In theory, it's possible to set a record," weather service meteorologist Brad Schaaf says. "It would take a lot of rain for that to happen, and it looks like a good majority of next week will be dry." For the weather service winter — known as meteorological winter — runs from Dec. 1 through the end of February. Last year's winter rainfall measured 6.73 inches, buoyed largely by a pre-Christmas storm that hit the Rogue Valley, according to the weather service. The previous winter saw 5.69 inches of rainfall in Medford. The long-term average winter rainfall in the Rogue Valley is 8.00 inches, Schaff says. The Portland area has already set a new rainfall record this winter, with more than a week to go in the season.
