Brophys picked top player in District 6 Lani Brophy not only dominated on the mound in District 6 softball this year, but the St. Marys junior was also a force at the plate. For her oustanding season, Brophy was selected as the District 6 most valuable player. She also was chosen to the Class 2A/1A all-state first team as a first baseman. League champion Cascade Christian and runner-up St. Marys each placed three players on the all-district first team in recent voting by the coaches. Brophy posted a 5-0 league record, including three shutouts, and had an 0.69 ERA. During the regular season, she was 12-1 with 103 strikeouts and a 1.44 ERA in 97 1/3 innings . "She became more than just a thrower," Cascade Christian coach Wally Nye said. "She learned to spot the ball and change speeds." Brophy led St. Marys with a .426 batting average. She also registered team highs in doubles (8), RBIs (15), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.544) and steals (22). "You always tried to pitch around her if you could," said Nye. "She loves to compete." St. Marys catcher Shawna Jackson and first baseman Shasta DeArmond were also first-team selections. Jackson did not make an error all season behind the plate and threw out nine runners stealing. The junior batted .405 and had 21 stolen bases. She led the team with 30 hits and 27 runs. DeArmond had a team-high two triples and 12 walks. The senior batted .345. Cascade Christian first-team picks were sophomore pitcher Laural Kelley, junior catcher Rebekah Gettman and sophomore shortstop Whitney Brookins. Kelley was 12-1 overall with a 1.78 ERA. She struck out 104 batters and walked 59 in 102 innings. Gettman had a strong defensive presence, throwing out 12 base runners. She batted .333, with 25 hits and 19 RBIs. Brookins batted .469 in league play and .352 overall. She had 25 hits on the season. Jackson, Kelley and Brookins also received all-state honorable mention.
