Henley defeated the Mustangs, 8-3 and 6-5. "When it counted (Card) was the guy," said Henley coach Joe Tacchini. "He came through when we needed him." In Game 1, Card allowed only one earned run with a 75-pitch, complete-game performance. Card struck out eight and walked one, and helped his cause with a base hit and two RBIs. Henley went up 4-0 after two innings, scoring three runs with two outs in the second. Advertisement Kelly Shannon and Josh Knapp each had two hits and one RBI for the Hornets (6-2, 2-0 Skyline). For Hidden Valley, Philip Pyle had two hits. The Mustangs’ RBIs came on Chandler Seyboldt’s squeeze bunt in the fourth and Kyle Kirchner’s two-out bloop single in the fifth. In the second game, Card drove in the winning run with a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh. Colin Stock opened the frame with a double, Jim Mastroianni was hit by a pitch and Knapp’s groundout moved the runners to second and third. The Mustangs had grabbed a 4-0 lead against sophomore pitcher Cody Fritz. "(Fritz) competed real well," said Tacchini, "He kept us in the game and gave us a chance to win." Kirchner and Seyboldt had three hits each for the Mustangs. Hidden Valley issued seven walks, hit one batter and made three errors in the nightcap. Henley’s Andrew Burg accounted for three RBIs on a bases-loaded walk in the third and a two-run double in the fourth. ROGUE RIVER 15-23, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0-1 — At Rogue River, Justin Castro notched eight straight strikeouts during one stretch of Game 2 and Gary Richardson stymied IV in the opener to secure a sweep in two five-inning games shortened by the 10-run mercy rule. Castro was 3-for-3 and Richardson belted two doubles in Game 1. Joey Parrillo, Alex Waroff and Mike Miller also doubled and added two hits apiece in the 11-hit attack. In Game 2, Richardson was 3-for-4 and Rogue River (7-0, 2-0 Skyline) also received doubles by Eli Haberman, Josh Hill and Spencer Frantz to pull away. MAZAMA 5-7, NORTH VALLEY 3-3 — At Merlin, Mazama capitalized on home runs by Ryan Starley and Jordan Nelson to sweep the twin bill. In the opener, Starley smashed a two-run homer in the first inning and added a solo shot in the third. Larry Wagner and Nelson added two hits each for the Vikings. North Valley sophomore Nate Ellis went 3-for-3, scored two runs and had one RBI. Marcos Morales added two hits and Tim Smith collected two RBIs for the Knights (1-7, 0-2 Skyline). In the nightcap, North Valley pitcher Josh Makepeace was the victim to four unearned runs in the fifth inning. Nelson highlighted the rally with a three- run blast. Clinton Tisch accounted for all three of the Knights’ runs with a two-run single in the first and a sacrifice fly in the sixth. In Game 2, the Pirates scored 12 runs in the first inning on five hit batsmen, four hits and four walks. The Loggers (0-9, 0-2 Sky A) had 12 errors and gave up 15 hits in the twin bill. Glendale’s Brent Prock had a two-run home run in the first game and a double in the second.
