The series celebrates rituals and traditions around high school football in communities nationwide. The video will be four to six minutes long and available online at www.aseasonoftradition.com by Thanksgiving, said U.S. Cellular Marketing Manager Kathleen Holtschneider, adding that it’s not a commercial. “It’s such a great cross-town rivalry, and the fact that the community really rallies for this game is really cool,” Holtschneider said. “As one (South Medford) student told us today, ‘We wait 364 days for this.’ ” U.S. Cellular reached out to district officials about two weeks ago to get permission to film the game and those involved. “We were excited that they wanted to feature the Black and Blue Bowl because the documentaries are very well done and because the game is a long-standing tradition,” said Medford School District spokeswoman Natalie Hurd. Chief Operations Officer Brad Earl worked with a district lawyer to draft a release form that was emailed to parents in English and Spanish and made available in both high schools’ front offices and athletic offices. Coaches also handed out the forms to the student-athletes. Students who already have turned in the form, which must be signed by a parent or guardian if the student is younger than 18, were given a wristband that they’ll need to wear to the game, and those who bring their form to the game will receive a wristband there, Hurd said. “Campus monitors will usher these students to a designated area in the student section,” she said. Students who forget their form or wristband or choose not to participate can still attend the game and sit in the student section, she added. Although the cameras are more likely to focus on the football players, coaches, athletic directors, band members and cheerleaders, some student fans seated in the designated area of the student section may catch a glimpse of themselves in the short documentary. Next Friday night, when South Medford High School plays the Thurston Colts, fans are invited to come out and be noisy, because U.S. Cellular will be there to take a decibel reading for its Battle of the Stands competition.
