However, he says the problem isn’t that mailboxes are on the wrong side of the street, he says U.S. drivers are on the wrong side of their cars. "The driver’s steering wheel is on the left side of the car. The curb is on the right," said Foucault. "There is no way you’re going to have the driver of the vehicle be able to access the curb side of the car without reaching across the passenger seat whether they’re driving north, east, south or west." Advertisement Foucault said only a few of the postal drop boxes are set up in locations where a driver can drop off mail without these vehicular gymnastics. "Most of them are set up for passenger and walk-ups," he said. So, Phyllis, until American car companies decide to realign the steering wheels, the best suggestion is to scope out the few boxes that do have driver-side slots or bring someone along for the ride.
