She loved flowers, especially fragrant pink roses and always had a garden. She loved Shakespeare and poetry, theatre, opera, and classical music. She hiked in the summer and cross country skied in the winter. Elizabeth Anne Jones was born in Washington DC on Flag Day, June 14, 1925. As a child, she thought the parade was for her birthday. She was known by her middle name Anne until her last few years when she began to prefer her first name, Elizabeth. She graduated with distinction in June 1943 from The National Cathedral School for Girls in Washington. She had been accepted for admission to the Connecticut College for Women, but World War II was on so she joined the effort by working in Honolulu as a clerk for the Navy and lived there with her aunt, uncle, and dear cousin Mary. It was there she met the love of her life, Robert Thomas Jones, a young handsome Navy pilot. They were married after the war and honeymooned on Maui. Anne and Bob raised three children; Janis, Dwight, and Jacqueline. Anne always read to her children with dramatic flair. Vacations were spent car camping and backpacking in the Sierras. When Bob retired from the Navy the family settled in Carmel Valley and they both became high school teachers. Anne's love of Shakespeare brought the family to the Rogue Valley in a VW camper bus and they bought 40 acres in Butte Falls. Bob and Dwight built a house and the family spent summers there. After they retired from teaching Anne and Bob moved to Butte Falls to start an organic farm. Her oldest daughter Jan bought 20 of the acres where she raised her family. After Bob's fatal heart attack at 50, Anne began traveling. She spent two years in Alaska, then six months in France, inviting her youngest daughter Jackie to join her on both trips. Jackie fell in love with Alaska and has lived there ever since. Dwight settled in Roseburg to raise his family. Anne acted whenever she had a chance. Her two leading roles were as the mother in The Glass Menagerie and the mad woman in The Mad Woman of Chaillot. She sold her home in Butte Falls and bought one on Terra Avenue in Ashland where she could be closer to theatre and her hiking friends. Ken Glasgow was her partner for 20 years and they enjoyed hiking and dancing together. She attended OLLI classes at SOU and taught several herself about trees of Oregon and literature. Her final year and a half was spent at Farmington Square Memory Care where she was lovingly cared for. She died peacefully at 5:00 a.m. October 4, 2014. She is survived by her three children and their spouses; Jan and Lowell Nicolaus, Dwight and Bonnie Jones and Jackie and David Perry; her grandchildren and their spouses Beth Drake, John (Michelle) Nicolaus, Stephanie (Bob) Broaddus, Jayson (Laura) Jones, and Avery Stewart; eight great-grandchildren, and her younger brother, Maxwell Howell and his wife Jill. Friends and family members will gather at 1:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12, 2014 in Lithia Park in Ashland to remember her. To attend, turn left off Main onto Granite Street, drive up Granite .8 miles. Turn into the first parking area past "Parks and Rec Office" sign. The area is directly across from 351 Granite. Please bring a chair and a memory about a time you shared with Elizabeth or Anne, depending how long you have known her. Those who wish can join family members on a hike where her ashes will be distributed according to her wishes.
