Revised plan set for Abby’s Holiday Classic By Kris Henry Updated: Dec 28, 2021 04:08 PM A A Boys basketball tourney turns to round-robin format Wednesday-Thursday at South Medford One day after canceling opening-day play in the 31st annual Abby’s Holiday Classic, tournament organizers have devised a new schedule for games to be played Wednesday and Thursday at South Medford High. Travel conditions brought on by winter weather caused the cancellation of Day 1 of the boys basketball tournament, along with the ultimate withdrawal of North Eugene and California’s Red Bluff High School for the planned three-day event. In Wednesday’s revised schedule, South Medford (6-2) will play host to Roseburg (3-6) at 3:30 p.m., followed by a game between South Salem (3-4) and North Medford (8-1) at 5 p.m. and Forest Grove (3-4) versus Ashland (3-2) at 6:30. On Thursday, Roseburg and South Salem will get things going at 10:30 a.m., with South Medford playing Forest Grove at 12 p.m. and Ashland facing North Medford at 1:30. All schedules continue to be weather-permitting. Game tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for students, with all games at South Medford High School. Passes are available for all six games at $10 for adults and $5 for students. Concessions will be available and, per Medford School District protocols, masks are required to be worn by spectators when not eating or drinking in the Panther gym. Given the change of tournament format beyond traditional bracketing, there will be no official champion crowned this year. Last year’s tournament was canceled altogether due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In claiming the 2019 crown, North Medford captured its 11th championship in tournament history and fifth in the past six years. South Medford hasn’t won its own tournament since 2012 but boasts nine titles overall. The Panthers and Black Tornado have met up in the championship final eight times, with North claiming the last three matchups to even the series at four wins apiece . Have a story idea?
