December 18, 2014. He was born February 4, 1928, in Managua, Nicaragua to Ernaldo Antonio and Amanda Maria Blandino. Ernaldo came to the United States in 1947 after being recruited to play baseball in the minor leagues as a shortstop. He served his adopted country in the United States Army for two years in Germany as a Military Policeman. While serving in Germany he was awarded his U.S. citizenship and was proud to be the first person outside of the United States to be sworn in as a citizen. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Dr. Tony Blandino of Jacksonville, Ore.; and by infant daughter, Theresa Blandino. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Martha Blandino; his son, Ernest (Irene) Blandino of Pomona, Calif., his daughters, Ixchel Lyn (Erik) Musurlian of Orange, Calif., Annette Blandino of Arlington, Wash., and Janet Winterer (Tim) of Florissant, Colo. He leaves behind seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren along with many other extended family members in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Al was an avid scratch golfer and sports enthusiast, who served as a volunteer golf pro at the White City VA Hospital instructing veterans. He and his wife Martha are longtime business owners in Medford. A celebration of Al's rich life was held privately. In lieu of flowers the family asks that expressions of sympathy be made to Friends of the Animal Shelter, 5595 S. Pacific Highway, Phoenix, OR 97535.
