We are facing challenges that can only be addressed as a united nation. Politicians and pundits who use fear and anger to manipulate us are unworthy of our attention. They act as if life is just a game and that winning is the main goal. And they are playing us for fools. Our government isn't against us; We the people are the government. We deny ourselves our collective ability to address national and world problems by believing a myth created by politicians to divide and conquer us for votes. The most important jobs will only get done by our coming together to elect representatives committed to working together. We have arrived at a crossroads and the incessant bickering must end. We have the means to have a positive impact on our major problems. Do we have within us the compassion and forgiveness necessary for change to happen? No matter what our beliefs, we are Americans first and we must affirm that we are all in this together. Our children's future and the viability of the republic are at stake. Gregory Ventana Medford Malheur stories misleading The MT ran an AP story Jan. 8 (by Gosia Wozniacka) about Dwight Hammond, the rancher whose imprisonment sparked the takeover of Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Prominent was a quote from a neighbor describing Hammond as one of "the nicest people who ever walked this earth." This about a man who has repeatedly threatened lives and said that he would wrap the 12-year-old son of a refuge manager in barbed wire and throw him down a well. Another AP story appeared in the MT Jan. 24 (by Keith Ridler) about the New Mexico rancher who renounced his federal grazing contract. Malheur occupiers had called on ranchers in Harney County and throughout the West to tear up their contracts. Only one person agreed to do so. Maybe the AP could do a story with a headline that reads "Zero ranchers from Oregon renounce federal grazing contracts." Or zero from Arizona. Or zero from Nevada. The Mail Tribune, and its readers, would be better served if the paper did not accept Associated Press stories from Malheur at face value. At least some of them are being submitted by reporters with either a clear agenda or an inability to fairly describe and interpret events. Jeffrey Tufts Medford CenturyLink disconnect When inclement weather blew through Eagle Point on Dec. 13, it caused an interruption in our telephone and Internet service through CenturyLink. The outage was reported and a repair ticket was initiated. It is now more than five weeks later, and our phone lines are still not working. Repeated calls to CenturyLink’s Customer Service desk generated additional repair tickets, which were then”closed.” Still no service. We were eventually told that a contractor would be hired by them to repair the phone lines, but no one is able to tell us if the work is even being done at this time. My last call to Customer Service on January 18 resulted in the person hanging up on me. Apparently CenturyLink thinks so little of its customers they can’t be bothered to stay in touch. Shameful! I’ll bet we hear from them when we refuse to pay the bill.
