Mail Tribune 100, Sept. 9, 1922 By Alissa Corman Sep 09, 2022 12:00 AM A A News from 100 years ago The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Sept. 9, 1922 BABIES CLINIC TO BE DAILY FEATURE COUNTY FAIR WEEK While the various and many agencies throughout the county have been making preparations for the County Fair, the Jackson County Health Association has not been idle. This organization is, perhaps the most far reaching in its scope of any in the county. Its headquarters at the fair will be found in the woman’s building, where a rest room will be maintained in connection with the exhibits. Varied programs will be put on during the fair which will include the proper method of bathing and dressing a babe, illustrated by tiny tots. A playlet, comprising music, dialogue, showing the merits of good health habits will be staged two days. The vital part of the program will be the clinics held by Dr. Holt, county health physician, on Friday and Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. The examination is limited to 40 babies on Friday and 25 babies on Saturday, ages from infancy to 3 years. On Thursday, Dr. Holt will give the Schick test to determine susceptibility to diphtheria, ages 1 to 6 years. This test will be limited to 100 children who must return on Saturday to learn the result of the test. Dr. E. F. Tucker, the noted expert on cancer will give his lecture with moving pictures on “The Reward of Courage” Saturday evening at 7:30. CARNIVAL COMPANY ARRIVES FOR FAIR With the arrival of the advance guard of concessions and amusements for the Jackson fair, “Pop” Gates is a very busy man. As chairman of the concessions committee he has worn out several pairs of shoes “personally conducting” the concessionaires to their respective parking places on the fair grounds. The mayor’s usually jovial expression has given way to a hard-boiled look that gets results. The Boucher-French Carnival company arrived Friday with a merry-go-round, Ferris wheel and five shows. A “whip” will be in operation during the fair and the riding devices will be sufficient to furnish the younger generation all the sport they wish. — Alissa Corman; [email protected]
