And, try as it might, Churchill didn’t offer up much of a road block. Mellisa Eastwold scored 20 points and the fast-breaking Black Tornado forced 28 turnovers to open the season with a 62-45 victory over visiting Churchill. North jumped to a 15-5 lead after the first quarter and held a double-digit advantage most of the way. "We got out early and had a lot of nice buckets in transition," said Tornado coach Tim Karrick. "We got in some foul trouble but I thought our bench did a nice job coming in and giving us some productive minutes." Freshman Erica Schultz was the biggest contributor off the pine, scoring seven points and pulling down seven boards. Eastwold led North in rebounds with 10 to go with five steals. Advertisement North Medford struggled from the field, shooting just 23 of 62 (37 percent) but took advantage of Churchill miscues and spread the wealth offensively. "We didn’t shoot well," said Karrick, "but to still put up 62 points is encouraging. "I was pleased to see the intensity level was good and we were pushing the ball and attacking the hoop. It was a nice, solid win." Michelle Westermann and Kailey Bostwick each added nine points for North, which travels to take on North Eugene on Friday. Mercedes Alexander led Churchill with 16 points. The Indians sported a 26-7 lead after one quarter of play and coasted to the victory. Hayley Buckbee had 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while Korynn Jorgensen added 14 points for Roseburg. Richardson had eight points, six rebounds and four steals to lead Hidden Valley (1-1) in a turnaround from a season-opening, 39-18 loss to Philomath. Danni Lindgren and Sam Abel each added seven points for the Mustangs, while Megan Swanson pulled down a team-high seven rebounds to go with four points and one blocked shot. The Knights held a significant height advantage with three 6-foot-5 starters, compared to one South Umpqua player measuring in at 6-3. North Valley starts a two-week stint where it will play six of the state’s Class 3A top 10 teams on Friday at top-ranked Wilsonville. MARY’S 67, ILLINOIS VALLEY 46 — At Cave Junction, junior guard Austin Grant collected 13 points and seven rebounds and sophomore center Garrett Fiddler had 10 points, four rebounds and four blocked shots as Rick Jackson enjoyed a successful coaching debut for St. Mary’s. The Crusaders smothered the host Cougars defensively in the first period as they shot out to a 17-7 first-period lead. They extended their margin to 37-17 at halftime and 51-26 after three periods. St. Mary’s was just as impressive at the offensive end, shooting a sizzling 64 percent from the field including 9-of-16 marksmanship from the 3-point line.
