Rebels take fifth at softball tourney The Rogue Valley Rebels couldnt fight their way out of the losers bracket Sunday, dropping a 7-2 contest to Xtreme at the 14-team ASA 14-and-under girls state Class A softball tournament. The Rebels finished the tournament tied for fifth with the Silver Bullets, who lost to eventual champion Oregon Spirits of Beaverton, 9-0, in their lone game of the day. The Spirits lost their first game of the tournament and had to win seven straight games, including five in a row on Sunday, to earn a birth in the regionals. They downed the undefeated Sun Supply team, also of Beaverton, in the finals, 3-1, then beat picked up the win in Game 2, 7-6, for the crown. The top six teams at the Oregon state tournament earn a spot into the regional tournament held in Tacoma, Wash., on July 21-23. Sun Supply had already sewn up a spot at nationals by winning a qualifying game earlier in the season. Though the Rebels finished tied for fifth, they apparently declined the invitation, leaving a spot open for the seventh-place Black Tornado of North Medford. The top two teams from regionals then move on to nationals. SUNDAYS RESULTS Oregon Spirits 9, Silver Bullets 0; Xtreme 7, Rogue Valley Rebels 2; Oregon Spirit 10, Xtreme 2; Oregon Spirit 4, Blaze 0; Oregon Spirit 3, Sun Supply 1; Oregon Spirit 7, Sun Supply 6.    Obituaries | Sports | Business | Classifieds |  Tempo | Prime Times | So Oregon Sites | Outdoor Journal | Subscribe | Contact | Movies | Advertise | Real Estate Showcase | Archive  | Editorials | Letters to the editor | Religion | Wake-up Call | NIE | Cyber Chef | Job Network | So Oregon Weather | WSJ Northwest | Forums | AP Wire | AP Money | F.A.Q. | Awards Ottaway Newspapers, Inc.
