That city is named Jerusalem. Jerusalem had been conquered by the Babylonians and had become a place of despair. Nehemiah received a burden from God to go and rebuild the city. He wanted to return the city back to its former glory. There are many people who can identify with broken places. They have been torn down and burned out and need to be rebuilt. Rebuilding not walls of brick and mortar, but rebuilding broken lives, rebuilding broken hearts, rebuilding broken minds, rebuilding broken relationships, rebuilding broken families, rebuilding broken dreams, rebuilding broken visions, rebuilding broken gifts, rebuilding broken talents, rebuilding broken hope, rebuilding broken belief, rebuilding broken character, rebuilding broken trust, etc. Each of us has experienced brokenness needing to be rebuilt. There are three levels of rebuilding. The first level of rebuilding is to repair, reassemble or replace. For when something is broken, it must be repaired. When something has fallen apart it must be reassembled. And when something is not working it must be replaced. This becomes the first step toward recovery. It is about starting things. Either you can allow things to stay as they are, or you can begin to rebuild. The second level of rebuilding is to restrengthen or reinforce. For in rebuilding, you don’t just want to build it back the way it was — you want to make it better than what it was. It must be rebuilt better. It must be rebuilt stronger. It must be rebuilt greater. Why? Because to rebuild a thing back the way it was is a set-up for it to be broken again. To rebuild a thing back the same way is a countdown to letdown. If you are going to rebuild, you must seek to improve and enhance it beyond what it was. The third level of rebuilding is to revise, reshape or reorganize. For you can rebuild, but if the infrastructure is not strong enough to support the foundation the building will collapse. This level has to do with the infrastructure and framework of a building. Infrastructure has to do with your support system. Infrastructure has to do with friends and family. You cannot rebuild and maintain the same type of friends you have always had. You must surround yourself with people who can support you not where you are, but where you are going. Your infrastructure has to be secure. Then, when you are attempting to build or rebuild your life there are those who will always have something to say about what you’re doing and where you’re going. For when you begin to improve your status, enhance your surroundings and create a better situation for yourself, you will have to deal with what’s called naysayers. Naysayers are those who frequently complain, talk negative and have a pessimistic attitude. A naysayer says that something will not work or is not possible. They are skeptical and cynical about everything you try to do. They will try to belittle and discredit you. You know, those who have something to say about everything. They are always trying to tell you what to do and how to do it. They treat you like you don’t know how to do anything for yourself. They ridicule and mock you, making fun of the things that are important to you. And you have to know how to deal with naysayers. You have to know how to deal with negativity. You have to know how to deal with doubters because they are all necessary for you to succeed. Nehemiah had to deal with Sanballat and Tobiah, who came to speak against what he was trying to do. They tried to say that what he was doing would not work and would not last. I have discovered that sometimes you can give people too much room and space in your life. You can sometimes put too much value into what people say and how they feel. And that happens when you are not a confident person and are used to people cosigning on your dreams and goals. People can talk you out of your place of greatness and talk you into a place of average all because they refuse to be stretched and want to remain where they are. But I encourage you today to begin to put the pieces of your life back together. You have not fallen apart so much that you cannot rebuild. Start today piece by piece rebuilding your life.
