Kinney makes cut with six-shot rally at Pumpkin Ridge NORTH PLAINS � After the first day of the U.S. Girls Junior Championship, Medford�s Tai Kinney appeared in a difficult position to make the cut of 64 for the match play portion of the event. Kinney was bunched in a 13-player tie for 102nd place after an opening round 12-over-par 83 Monday on the Witch Hollow Course at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club. But Kinney put together a 6-over-par 77 on the Ghost Creek Course at Pumpkin Ridge Tuesday to finish in a 10-player tie for 53rd with a 160 total for 36 holes. The cut for match play came at 19-over-par 161, with a seven-way playoff to decide the final one berth. Johnna Nealy of Grants Pass shot rounds of 81 and 81 for a 162, just missing the playoff by one stroke. Kinney, a 17-year-old incoming senior at North Medford High, will open today�s first round of match play at 11:56 a.m. against Dayna Burleigh of Horsham, Pa., on the par-71 Witch Hollow course. Burleigh shot a 151 in the two-day qualifier. Erica Blasberg, 16, of Corona, Calif., shot a 2-over-par 144 to capture medalist honors. Three strokes behind were 14-year-old twin sisters Aree and Naree Wongluekiet of Bradenton, Fla. Aree Wongluekiet is the defending champion. PGA JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP � At Sand Point, Idaho, Medford�s Abby Fowler came up two strokes short in the final round of the Pacific Northwest section PGA Junior Championship golf tournament at Hidden Lakes Country Club. Fowler, a senior-to-be at South Medford High, carded a 74 and finished tied for second with Katie Street, who also shot a 74. Brooke Jackson rode the momentum of Monday�s tournament-leading 71 to earn the title with a 76 on Tuesday. "I missed a couple of putts, some three footers that I should have had," said Fowler. "I just wasn�t very lucky with my putting today." Jackson moves on to play in the national championships in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. Ashland�s Stephanie Johns shot an 89 after carding a 76 on Monday to earn the top spot in her age group. Little League MEDFORD AMERICANS 6, PENDLETON 5 � At Ontario, the undefeated Medford Americans were down to their last out in the third round of the 11-12-year-old major boys state tournament at Beck Kiwanis Park. But Tommy George�s two-run single lifted the Americans to the dramatic victory in their final at-bat. The victory moves Medford to within one win of qualifying for the Western Regional in San Bernadino, Calif. Medford (3-0) advances to the championship game Thursday against the winner of today�s Pendleton-Gresham match. If Medford loses the 9 a.m. game, it will have another opportunity at 3 p.m. Thursday to win the eight-team, double-elimination state tournament. Pendleton scored one run in the top of the sixth inning to break a 4-all tie. In the bottom of the sixth, Michael Harthun reached base on an error and Ryan Folsom was brought in as a pinch runner. Zach James walked and both runners advanced to second and third on a wild pitch. With two outs, George singled up the middle, scoring both runners. Medford starting pitcher Jared Adamson collected two hits, including a first-inning solo homer, and Tyler Heil added two hits. Heil also picked up the victory with a one-inning relief effort. Bowling BROOKINGS INTERSTATE TOURNAMENT � At Brookings, Scharie Bostrom of Medford bowled a scratch 702 series to help her women�s doubles team to the top spot after the first of two weekends of the handicap event at Azalea Lanes. Bostrom and Debbie Corcoran of Medford lead the division with a 1,426 total. Bostrom put together games of 225, 259 and 218 in the women�s doubles division, while Corcoran had a high-game 202 to accompany a 532 scratch series. Corcoran leads the women�s singles division with a 737 total. She bowled games of 236, 190 and 179 for a 605 scratch series. Corcoran and Bostrom also hold the lead in the four-person mixed team event with former Medford Lanes owner Andy Anderson and Corcoran�s husband Chris. The Anderson�s Best Bowling Supply team has a 3,476 score.
